The State of Indiana requires schools complete mandated health screenings for hearing and vision, as well as verification of immunizations for students in specific grade levels. Screening data identifies students with potential visual and or hearing defects. The Health Services Department assists schools with maintaining compliance with these state mandates through audits and submission of data to the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) and the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH).
Vision acuity screenings are required for students enrolled or transferring into either kindergarten or first grade, along with grades three, five, and eight. Any student suspected of having a visual defect should also be screened. A Vision Modified Clinical Technique (MCT) Screening, by a licensed eye professional, is required for students entering kindergarten or first grade. IPS partners with the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) and the school nurses for support in completing vision screenings for the district.
Hearing screenings are required for students enrolled in first, fourth, seventh, and tenth grade, as well as any student who has transferred into the school corporation or any student suspected of having a hearing defect. IPS Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) support the completion of hearing screenings for schools in the district.
Immunization verification is required for every child enrolled at an accredited Indiana school. Each school must keep a record of students’ immunization verification on file. In addition, schools must ensure student immunization data has been entered into the state immunization registry, Children and Hoosier Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP). While immunization data can only be entered into CHIRP by a medical professional, such as a school nurse, Power School, and CHIRP ….
The School Health Report consists of aggregated vision, hearing, and immunization numbers. All public and state accredited non-public schools are required to submit their data to the IDOE at the end of each school year via the School Health Report located in the IDOE Online System. Each building must submit a School Health Report, reports cannot be combined and submitted as a corporation.
