Athlete of the Week

Brandon Pankow, Senior

Keli Borem, Sophomore

Week #8:  Great Northern Conference Meet @ NPHS  (October 14, 2017)

“…Keli couldn’t make things work as a 9th grader to fit CC into her schedule, but I know that she doesn’t regret making it work this year. She fit right in with the team, and has learned to push and challenge herself each and every time out in competition this year. Once again at Eagle River she raced out in the top pack and really pushed herself to another PR effort, improving her in-season 5K time by close to ten minutes since some of her summer 5K road race times. She has really learned a lot about herself and the sport of Cross-Country this year.”

“…it would benefit all of our athletes to catch a dose of Brandon’s enthusiasm for the sport of Cross-Country. Brandon, ran a sub-24 minute 5K at Eagle River (one of his long term goals) and was ecstatic with his result. He has been an inspiration to the athletes all season and one of our most improved in-season athletes, with nearly nine minutes of in-season improvement from where he started in August.”

Shawn Dirx, Junior

Lauren Bauman, Senior

Week #7:  Hatchet Invitational @ Edgewater CC (October 7, 2017)

“…on Saturday she pulled through for a seasonal best and earned medalist honors for herself in the process. Lauren has also been instrumental all season in helping our younger athletes in her leadership position as a co-captain. She put an exclamation point on her 4-year career, finishing her last race at Edgewater in a solid way!”

“… Shawn got into a nice groove mid-race and with his strength was able to maintain a nice tempo carrying him to his fastest 5K ever and had his first varsity scoring effort. His competitive nature really shined at this race as he made the next big step as a Cross-Country runner.”

Kole Svacina,  Senior

Gillian Buckwalter, Sophomore

Week #6:  Waupaca Invitational @ Waupaca HS (September 28, 2017)

“…Gillian has had a great season for us. Once again at Waupaca, she handled the challenges of the course and was able to put herself in a position that allowed her to be successful and place in the top half of a very good invitational field.”

“…Kole had a solid race on a tough course. Being able to P.R. at Waupaca is not the norm and Kole was able to do this. He continues to run with confidence and his leadership ability with our younger athletes on the junior varsity squad has been greatly appreciated. Kole has left a positive impression on our program in his 4-year stint with the team!”

Evan Ploeckelman, Junior

Meagan Berg, Sophomore

Week #5:  Oshkosh Lourdes Invitational @ Lake Breeze GC (September 23, 2017)

“…as a sophomore, Meg has really stepped it up this year, knocking nearly two minutes off her P.R. and approaching each race with confidence. We feel that the work she put in on the track this past spring and her off-season commitment to running is the reason that she has improved and has become our consistent #2 runner this year. She is also a great role model for the rest of the team with her year-round work ethic, determination, and commitment.”

“…as a staff we could see that the athletes that competed here last year handled things a bit better than most of our newcomers. Evan was a prime example of this. He was able to stay out of trouble in the tight quarters, put himself in a good position early in the race, and was one of our only athletes to improve his position throughout the race. He had a solid race here last year and sometimes that is a good confidence builder coming back to a friendly familiar venue. Having a tough mental attitude is half the battle in running and as a veteran Evan has this trait covered!”

Drew Bolder, Freshman

Haley Voermans-Dean, Sophomore

Week #4:  Smiley Invitational @ Wausau (September 16, 2017)

“…Haley has had a super first half of her season, capped off with another awesome performance at Smiley!  Her racing consistency and competitiveness is one of the contributing factors to the success of our young girls’ team this year. She raced to a personal best time of 20:03, the 2nd fastest 5K time in school history.”

“…he blistered the course in a personal best time of 16:42 finishing as one of the top freshman in any division with his 5th place D2 medalist effort.  Drew’s time also moves him into a tie for 12th on the all-time 5K list at Tomahawk. Additionally, he is only the second freshmen to crack the 17-minute barrier. He continues to turn heads and draw the attention of coaching colleagues with his abilities as only a freshman. He runs and competes at the level many seniors aspire to!”

Trey Baalke, Freshman

Autumn Peissig, Freshman

Week #3:  Fall Creek Invitational (September 9, 2017)

“…Autumn picked up her first individual race title already as a freshman. This was possible in part as she came into the season with a solid training base and has been working hard in practice every day. She is handling the adjustment to the high school athletic routine like a seasoned veteran and is continuing to learn a lot about the sport of Cross-Country. She is a very focused and driven individual that has already earned a lot of respect from her teammates for her attitude and work ethic.”

"…Trey is a very competitive individual that is really starting to come into his own as a Cross-Country athlete. He made a big jump this year in his running ability compared to last year and has been one of about 4-5 athletes working for the last two varsity spots on the team. This inner-squad competition is awesome and will only help us get better as a team. For Trey to lead the race this weekend was a great learning experience that will help him in future races.”

Parker Johnson, Senior

Luke Olson, Senior

Arianna Schreiner, Sophomore

Week #2:  Marathon Invitational (August 31, 2017)

… “Arianna had an outstanding race, her improvement over last year at the same event was phenomenal! She improved nearly 4 minutes and 40 positions over last year. She also had her highest team finish as a Hatchet varsity scorer. ”

… “Both young men have really stepped it up this season. From top JV and at times varsity performers last year, to consistent varsity scorers and the core of our team leadership this season. Their work ethic this summer was a key attribute to this improvement and the youth of our team is learning quickly from their dedication and drive. Additionally, both athletes improved in both finish position and time at this event compared to last year. ”

Keaton Jed, Sophomore

Morgan Waye, Senior

Week #1:  Ashland Invite (August 24, 2017)

Morgan Waye… “despite some nagging lingering blisters from camp, she showed some real heart as she picked off eight runners down the stretch and improved her time by nearly 3 minutes from last year. She showed great leadership keeping our #2-#5 scoring pack under a minute, a key reason why we placed where we did as a team.”

Keaton Jed… “we knew that one of our weak spots this year could potentially be our 5th scoring spot. Early in the summer we challenged a few of the guys that we thought could fill this and Keaton has really responded. His competitiveness had allowed his talent to shine and he has made the most of the opportunity. He improved from his rookie season by two minutes in his 5K and from our 14th team finisher at Ashland to a varsity scorer! The accomplishment speaks for itself!”
