Foundational skills standards focus around fostering students’ understanding and working knowledge of print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, and fluency; the necessary components of effective, comprehensive reading. These standards are designed to develop proficient readers with the capacity to comprehend texts across a range of types and disciplines.
