Visual Arts
Hi! I’m Mrs. Skylar Baumer, and I am so excited to be your art teacher! I was born and raised in Summerville, South Carolina, and graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia with my BFA in Art Education—Go Gamecocks! While earning my degree, I gained wonderful experience student teaching at both the elementary and middle school levels, which led me to jump immediately into my first full-time position teaching middle school art in my hometown of Summerville. I am 4k-12th grade single-subject certified in Visual Arts in both South Carolina and California. My husband’s career recently brought us across the country to San Diego; it is a very big change from the East Coast and it is undeniably beautiful, so I am looking forward to exploring more of the area as I settle in.
Art has always been a huge part of my life, and I am constantly looking for new ways to incorporate exciting, tactile materials into the classroom. I also absolutely love art history and aim to teach as much of it as I can, as I believe the stories of the past can be a huge inspiration for our own work. In my free time, I am a big reader and am rarely seen without my Kindle. At home, I love to cook and try new foods, or simply relax with my husband and our cat, Oreo. Of course, I also stay busy with my own art outside of school; you can usually find me painting, drawing, making pottery, or working on various arts and crafts. I can’t wait to start this creative journey and begin making masterpieces with all of you.
This page is the heartbeat of our art program. Here, you’ll find my teaching philosophy, studio safety guidelines, and a peek into the daily rituals that help us grow as artists. Learn about the 'why' behind what we create and get to know the environment where our students' ideas come to life.
