I believe that the art room should be more than just a place to complete assignments—it should be a sanctuary. For many students, the school day is busy and fast-paced. When they walk into my studio, I want them to feel an immediate sense of calm and belonging. My goal is to provide a comforting environment where students can decompress, express themselves freely, and feel "at home" while they create.
1. A Culture of Respect
In this studio, we respect three things: the artist, the process, and the space. We respect the artist by valuing every person’s unique voice and background.
We respect the process by understanding that everyone learns at a different pace.
We respect the space by taking care of our tools and keeping our "creative home" clean for everyone.
2. Fearless Creativity
I believe that "perfection" is the enemy of creativity. In my classroom, we celebrate "happy accidents." I encourage my students to take risks, try new mediums, and push the boundaries of their imagination. A large part of my role is to give them the tools and the confidence to figure out how to bring their own visions to life.
3. A Comforting & Inclusive Space
Art can be vulnerable. To create something new, you have to be willing to try and possibly fail. I strive to make my classroom a "safe harbor" where students know their ideas will be met with kindness. Whether we are listening to soft music while we work or engaging in a supportive group critique, the comfort of my students is always my top priority.
My mission is simple: I want my students to leave my room feeling happier than when they walked in. By fostering a space that is equal parts challenging and comforting, I hope to instill a lifelong love of the arts in every student. I want them to realize that art isn't just a subject in school—it’s a tool for relaxation, communication, and joy.
