Welcome back to Torbay School for 2018!

Welcome back to another school year. We hope you enjoyed the summer break. For the next few weeks we will be establishing class routines. We have lots of great learning experiences planned (especially camp and surf lifesaving!) We are looking forward to getting to know you and your child over the next few weeks. It is our goal to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment that promotes your child to be a motivated, inquisitive, curious, collaborative and creative learner. Our team will have a web page attached to the school website , please check this regularly as this is the way we share what is happening inside the classroom. This can be found on our school website. Students will also have their own See-Saw accounts which will be set up during week 2 - more information to follow.

This year we will be WONDERING….. Our big Question this term is “I wonder how I can use my learner powers”. We will be empowering children to take ownership of their learning to increase engagement and develop the skills required to becoming lifelong learners. Our learning intends to challenge their thinking, learning and ultimately have fun doing it! Students will have the opportunity to work with students that are at similar levels, independently and collaboratively. Students may also work in another class within Year 4. HOME LEARNING:

Please find below a guideline for home learning this year (this information will also be on our team site).

Spelling

Your child will receive new words each week to practice and learn. These words will come from the spelling programme ‘You Can Spell’. They write their words into their spelling notebooks after a levelled pre-test, therefore they will only be learning words they get incorrect. They will be tested on these words one a week.

Maths

We encourage you to put some time aside for basic facts practise each week. There are also some great sites that you may also want to use These will be added to our team blog. Play a board game. Play IXL etc.

Writing

iWrite Planning (see more information on our team blog - this will start Week 3)

Every fortnight your child will brainstorm ideas, dialogue, characters and genre around a particular prompt (phrase/picture…) these will be displayed in class and on our website. The brainstorm that they have completed at home will guide them through their iWrite time.

Reading

Your child is expected to read for 15-20 mins each night. This could be the newspaper, comic book, picture book, chapter book, letters, maps, diagrams etc!

Climb a tree, play a sport, work on a hobby, make a cup of tea for someone, talk together as a family, play games and have fun. These things are really important too!

We look forward to working in partnership with you throughout the coming year. If you have any questions now, or at anytime in the future, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
