On Tuesday 21st May 2019, a selection of students from Sheffield Hallam University were on hand to provide valuable physiotherapy and sports massage cover for players involved in the inaugural Football Aid charity football match at the home of Rotherham United Football Club.
As part of the experience, the students were able to gain an insight into the events and football industry, as well as obtaining some valuable practical experience to support their academic studies and future careers.
After the event, we caught up with Lee Higginbotham (Senior Physiotherapist and Lecturer from Sheffield Hallam University) to capture his thoughts on the evening, and the experience as a whole:
“The students in attendance all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to develop their practical knowledge and clinical skills whilst also gaining an understanding of working in professional sports amongst such great surroundings as the New York Stadium. The student physiotherapy team and I would like to offer our sincere thanks to Richard (Milne) and the organisers at Football Aid for putting on such a well organised, professional event and one in which Sheffield Hallam is proud to be able to offer our students the opportunity to be involved in”.
Phoebe Cheung (student at Sheffield Hallam) also spoke about her experience after the event:
“I had a great time and experience amongst some great professionals. I am very grateful for the opportunity given by Sheffield Hallam and Football Aid to practice my skills in such a fantastic environment and facilities as the New York Stadium”.
Lastly, Richard Milne (Events Manager at Football Aid) said:
“We were delighted to team up with Sheffield Hallam University for our inaugural charity football match at (The) AESSEAL New York Stadium, home of Rotherham United Football Club. The health and safety of our participants (and spectators) at all times is of the greatest importance and the University’s involvement on the night was pivotal in the overwhelming success and enjoyment of the event. On behalf of everyone here at Football Aid, I would like to express our most sincere thanks to Lee (Higginbotham) and his team for their fantastic efforts, and we look forward to working with the University again in the near future”.
