Within this section you will find a tool for assessment which can be used across the placement circuit to assess students against the proficiencies using evidence from previous placements on one familiar assessment form
The Care and Clinical Skills Assessment Tool (CCAST) is an assessment tool developed in Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH). With their permission we have adapted the document to allow for the assessment of students, who are being assessed against the University criteria and not criteria aimed at proficiency for independent practice.
Although the qualification to be a Practice Supervisor is to be a registered professional, in clinical practice we have many Clinical Support Workers who are the “subject matter expert” in the area e.g., in performing venepuncture, therefore the subject matter expert - rather than the Practice Supervisor - may be a more appropriate person to assess the student. To ensure we meet the NMC guidance for student assessment, this assessment would require a counter signature from a Practice Supervisor/Assessor. This counter signature would be a signature to prove the most appropriately experienced and competent person completed the assessment of the student.
It is hoped that this document will be used across the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw placement circuit, being recognisable to all Assessors, thus allowing for students to carry over formal supporting evidence from one Trust to another.
