In their pursuit of saving Riley, Joy realizes that happiness alone cannot save Riley and pushing Sadness further represses her authentic emotions, proving detrimental to her well-being.

Thus, with Sadness surfacing to take control of Riley’s emotions and being allowed to truly express herself, Riley is able to fully embrace her vulnerability, gain empathy, and perceive the world around her in a new light.
The film, in its unique fashion, highlights the importance of each individual emotion in a person’s well-being and encourages the audience to accept the dynamic nature of emotions, for it is truly the human experience.
