We have received the Reading Schools Core Award!
Well done to all the pupils who have been part of the Reading Schools Leaders of Learning Group this academic year.
Also a huge thank you to Miss Barnes for leading this group and ensuring that Mortlach Primary School were meeting the requirements to achieve the Core Award.
The purpose of Reading Schools is to encourage a love of reading.
To achieve the Core Award Miss Barnes and the pupil had to ensure that there was a reading culture within school.
To develop a reading culture within the school the pupils, and Miss Barnes, organised lots of reading for enjoyment activities throughout the year, especially during World Book Day. They ran competitions across the school such as design your own dragon, linked to the book 'How to Train your Dragon', and 'Book in a Box' for World Book day. The group set up a Reading Schools display in the hall, including an author of the month. The group also made 'Tell us what you are reading' signs for classroom doors, so that staff could write what books their class are currently reading as class novels, which will hopefully inspire other pupils to read those books in the future. The group have also encouraged reading across the school in a variety of other ways.
All of the evidence of what the pupils had achieved had to be collated and shared with the Reading Schools accreditation team. This was no easy task but the pupils and Miss Barnes rose to the challenge.
But the journey doesn't stop here!
Now that we have achieved the Core Award our next step is to work towards the Silver Accreditation.
To achieve the Silver Award our pupils and staff will have to build on the work completed for the Core Award by 'providing additional opportunities to broaden ...learner's experiences both in and outside of the classroom, such as engaging with authors, visiting libraries, and bringing in other outside expertise.'
