A curriculum rationale is a clear explanation of why a particular curriculum exists and why it is designed the way it is. It justifies the choices made about what is taught, how it is taught, and what learners are expected to achieve.
In simple terms, it answers the question:
“Why are we teaching this, in this way, to these learners?”
Explains the educational philosophy or theory behind the curriculum.
Justifies content selection (subjects, skills, values).
Clarifies the needs of learners and the wider school community.
Shows alignment with standards, policies and goals.
Guides pupils, staff, parents/carers and stakeholders in understanding the curriculum’s intent.
