From October 2026 until August 2027 the Mortlach Primary School building will be undergoing some major building upgrades. These will ensure that our building is fit for the future, a warm, safe and modernised space for our pupils to learn.
Last academic year, new windows and external doors were installed across the building. This work was completed by Robertsons and led to us having a much warmer building, not to mention making the building look much more modern. Robertsons worked alongside our pupils, staff and community for the majority of the academic year and supported the school to take part in the Big Build Event, supported our first Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL) fortnight based on sustainability, helped with snow clearing in the winter and purchased new bark for our Eco Garden. It was a pleasure to have the Robertsons team on site.
This next phase of the building upgrades will be undertaken by Morrisons. We look forward to building positive relationships with the new construction team for the benefit of our pupils and the wider community.
Morrisons will be upgrading electrics and lighting throughout the school building. They will also be upgrading our current heating system to a new air source system. Some rooms will have ceilings raised, while others will have ceilings lowered, as well as other planned works.
All this work will be undertaken in a planned phased operation. To allow this to be done in a safe manner part of the school building needs to be vacated by pupils and staff from October 2026 until Easter 2027 (two terms). Our P5, P5/6 and P7 pupils will be transported daily to Speyside High School where they will undertake all their learning from October until Easter.
This transition to Speyside High School will be a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to engage with resources and equipment which we do not have access to in a primary setting, such as the swimming pool, science labs and cooking areas. This period of time will also allow our P7 pupils to familiarise themselves fully with the school building before they transition up to Speyside High in August 2027.
Mortlach Primary pupils will have different break and lunch times to the Speyside High pupils. Our pupils also have their own classrooms which will not be used by SHS pupils and staff.
Mrs Scott, Mrs Wickert, Miss Barber and Mrs Frew spent the last two days of Term 1 at Speyside High School perparing the classrooms for our P5-P7 pupils. Well done and a huge thank you to the staff who have created such welcoming learning environments for our pupils.
Also, huge thank you to our support staff who have been going above and beyond at Mortlach to help with the sorting, boxing, storing and moving of all resources and equipment at Mortlach.
Before the October holidays all P5 to P7 pupils had the chance to take part in a trial bus run to SHS. The P7 pupils were able to visit their classroom during this visit. The P5 and P5/6 pupils were able to visit the area that would be turned into their classrooms. However, the staff took lots of pictures of the P5 and P5/6 classrooms once they had set them up at the end of term to allow our pupils to see the spaces before the start learning in them on Monday 26th October. The spaces are airy, bright, warm and welcoming. Fantastic areas of our pupils to learn.
Phase 1
On Monday 26th October our P5-P7 pupils will move to SHS for their learning. Our P1-P4 pupils will remain at Mortlach Primary School in their current classrooms.
During phase 1, the P7, P5/6 and Thistle Work rooms will under go the ungrading works. Following completion of these works our P1-P4 pupils will move into these completed rooms and the phase 2 work will begin on the upgrades to the classrooms which have been vacated. It is hoped that phase 2 will begin after the Christmas Holiday.
Keep checking back on this area of our website to see the progress being made on the upgrades.
