Glow

What is Glow?

Glow is Scotland’s nationally available digital environment that can be used to support learning across the whole curriculum. It provides learners access to a number of web services such as Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace for Education and Glow Blogs. Access to Glow is restricted to learners and educators who are each issued a username and password to access their account. A user name and password are required to access Glow, both of which are issued to learners by their school. Please contact your school's general admin e-mail account for support with Glow login issues. Full details can be found HERE.

Glow allows learning to take place outside the classroom on any device that has internet access. Glow itself is not an app; however many of the resources such as Office 365 and Google Workspace can be downloaded as apps and accessed with Glow login details.

Glow allows learners to work in a variety of ways, from collaborating with peers to working individually at their own pace. Glow services are free to all students with a Glow login and can be accessed at anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

Benefits of Glow for learners

  • Microsoft Office 365 – Glow provides full access to Microsoft’s office suite including: Mail, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, OneDrive and SharePoint. As well as using this service online through Glow, learners can download a full version of Office 365 at no cost. This can develop their skills with Office applications, support their learning outside school and use collaborative tools such as Sway to create and share interactive presentations demonstrating their learning both inside and outwith Glow.

  • Google Workspace for EducationGoogle Workspace for Education is a set of cloud-based productivity tools for communication and collaboration. G Suite for Education in Glow is a managed service that offers the following core services: Classroom, Drive, Docs, Hangouts, Calendar, Sites and Vaults. These tools can be used to support learning both inside and outwith the classroom and support collaboration between learners.

  • Collaborative working – Glow is a cloud-based service, meaning learners can work both individually and collaboratively on documents, projects and homework from any connected device.

  • Anywhere, anytime learning – Learners can access the resources and features of Glow using any device at any time. This means that learning can continue outside the classroom on any device that is connected to the internet

  • Glow Blogs – Glow Blogs allows learners to build their own blogs, giving them experience of developing an online community which they can keep private or share with other Glow users.

Usernames and passwords

Learners will be issued a Glow username and password by their school. If they have forgotten their password, they can reset it themselves using a recovery email they have set up. If additional assistance is required to reset passwords please contact the school in the first instance. Please be aware that password reset requests can only be dealt with during normal school hours and may take a while for you to receive a response if your school is in lock-down or closed.

Once the learner has a new temporary password, they will be prompted to reset it to something more secure that they can remember. Young learners may require some assistance in selecting a password; however where possible the learner should do this themselves. We recommend three random words that can be easily remember with a space in-between each word, eg: purple sun lamp. Further guidance on password security and it's importance can be found - here.

Updating you Glow password

Password security is vital when working online. If you think someone may know your password you can change it at any time. Remember to make you new password something you will remember and do not share your password. If multiple people are using the same device it is important that passwords are not saved by the web browser, as other users could gain access to each others Glow accounts.

Additional videos to help learners make the most out of their Glow account can be found in the Moray Digital Learning Team SharePoint site which can be accessed by clicking - HERE. Please note learners must be logged on to Glow to view this content.

Logging into Glow with Games Consoles

If the learner doesn't have access to a computer, laptop or tablet or phone which connects to the internet they can log onto Glow via a Xbox or PSP4. Click on the links below to see how.

Tips for shared devices

If there are multiple users using a single device setting up a separate browser profiles for each user can help organise favourites and making switching between users much quicker; however as stated above passwords should not be saved in the browser to ensure only the account holder can access their Glow account. The videos below will demonstrate how browser profiles can be created in both Edge, Chrome and Firefox browsers.

For greater security users may consider setting up separate user accounts for each person who will accessing the device. This would require each users to log in before having access to their content and logging out to allow the next user to be able to use the device. The process for creating users accounts is dictated by the device being used. Please refer to your your manual or search online for instructions on how this can be done for your device.
