During the summer of 2016, 2018 and 2019, I worked as at the Maryvale Day Camp through the Buffalo Niagara YMCA. In 2016, I was the senior counselor of the youngest group of campers, the Discovers, ages five to six. During the summer of 2018 and 2019, I was the unit leader of the oldest group of campers, the Pathfinders, ages nine to eleven. I was responsible for planning the weekly activities including the arts, physical activities, and STEM projects. I also was responsible for group management, monitoring swim lessons, and leading field trips.
This is my group of campers during Summer 2018, along with two of my co-workers.
Pathfinders completing a STEM activity during "Mad Science" week in which they demonstrate the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies. Some campers can be seen wearing their "lab coats".
During the summer of 2017, I volunteered at an orphanage about 45 minutes outside the city of Krakow with Canisius College Campus Ministry. We worked with at risk youth ages three to twelve and were involved in a camp-like atmosphere. I taught daily English lessons to the children and was responsible for a small group of children at all hours of the day.
Oliwier is a three year old child who I spent a lot of time caring for while in Poland. He would call me "moja ciocia" or "my aunt".
Each evening, our team of volunteers would perform American camp songs and dances for the Polish children to further their knowledge of English.
