This is a fourth grade unit on Women's Rights. Students focus on the essential differences between men and women during the 1800’s and challenges them to think about the inequalities that still exist today. Students will learn where women’s rights originated and will appreciate the efforts of the women’s rights leaders that they will learn about throughout the unit. The unit includes four lessons incorporating various technologies such as VoiceThread and a SmartBoard review activity.
This is a Kindergarten unit on Weather and Climate composed of four lessons. Students practice the scientific method through experimentation and participate in data collection to create their own weather forecast. The lessons follow the Five "E's" format for inquiry: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
For the practice edTPA, I wrote four lessons on opinion writing using strategies such as text and illustration analysis, retelling, and considering the audience while writing. The school I taught at followed the Lucy Calkins' Units of Study curriculum. The students were evaluated on their ability to write a complete opinion letter using textual evidence to support their opinion.
For the edTPA, I wrote three lessons on informational writing through the use of strategies that involve both science and research. The students used experimentation and mentor texts to write complete lab reports following the scientific method, describing their process and results. This unit followed the Lucy Calkins' Units of Study curriculum. The students were evaluated on their ability to write a complete lab report including a new question, hypothesis, procedure, and results.
I taught a first grade literacy lesson on sequencing to a small group of six students. In this lesson, students participated in the guided reading of a Curious George book and labelled printed images from the book as "beginning", "middle", and "end". The lesson concluded with a worksheet that the students completed individually where they drew pictures of each section of the book in sequential order.
This lesson was taught to a fifth grade science class and focused on the difference between physical and chemical changes. The students participated in five stations, each with a different experiment. The students completed the scientific method for each experiments and were evaluated using an exit ticket.
This presentation describes the unique ways that literacy is incorporated into mathematics and how teachers can help support students in the reading of text in mathematics. Strategies typically taught through the ELA curriculum such as vocabulary instruction, analysis of text structures, and graphic organizers are extremely useful in mathematics as well.
I enhanced a book using QR codes for an ELL student in a first grade class. I recorded myself reading the book and included codes for further learning as well. This is a presentation I made with details on the student as well as more information on the book and its purpose.
This directory includes five math and five science activities for students in Kindergarten through first grade. Each activity includes a description of the skill, rationale, objectives, materials needed, motivation, the procedure, assessment, and an extension activity.
