Fifth Grade is the year in which students will take their first Washington State testing in the arts. The examination is known as the CBPA (Classroom Based Performance Assessment). It is not a traditional standardized test but is more project and performance oriented. Students in past years have enjoyed the experience. This testing usually occurs in late winter-early spring.
In the Fifth Grade, music students will have the opportunity to listen to great works of music and learn about famous composers. They will continue todevelop their skills playing their recorders!!! They will continue to play a variety of percussion instruments as well and revisit chordal accompaniments on instruments. They will continue developing skills necessary to match pitch and demonstrate good singing technique. They will continue developing their skills in reading music notation (quarter, eighth, half & whole notes/rests). They will expand their range of reading pitches on lines and spaces to include the bass cleff as well. Using correct musical notation, they will write out several songs to play on the recorder. They will also use their skills to compose original music for their recorders. Best of all, they will have a good time doing it!
