Policies
Graduation Requirement
20 hours total over the course of 4 years in high school
recommended students complete 5 hours each school year
Seniors that do not fulfill their graduation requirement may not be able to receive their graduation tickets, participate in the graduation ceremony, and/or receive their diploma
Maroon Cord
150+ hours over the course of 4 years in high school
Deadline: Friday following Spring break
Science Camp
Open to Juniors & Seniors ONLY with priority to seniors!
MUSD elementary schools only
Earn 40 hours (8 hours max per day following MUSD Board policies)
Students may only attend a MUSD sanctioned outdoor education/science camp for a one week period and only one time per school year
MUST have parent, teachers, attendance secretary, AND respective assistant principal approval
Students must secure approval from teachers to miss class for the dates & times requestedÂ
Teachers will allow students to make up work the same number of days missed:
Students missing 5 days of class will have 5 days to complete any missed class work
Students MUST have satisfactory attendance and grades
All required documents pertaining to each camp are submitted to the community service coordinator by the deadline posted
Students MUST follow the Milpitas High School behavioral policy while in attendance at the outdoor education/science camp
Tutoring
Must be under a non-profit organization
Cannot charge tutees/clients for services
Cannot be 1:1 with a parent/child signing off on hours
Prep time and lesson planning are NOT considered community service
Only the hours where volunteers are actually tutoring students count
Students need to provide a breakdown of the hours being submitted
General Policies
All time cards are reviewed on a case-by-case basis
Students can begin accumulating hours toward graduation and maroon cord requirements the Summer before their Freshmen year
New Students/Transfers - please reach out to community service coordinator for possibility of reduced hours
Hours earned:
School in Session (school day): maximum of 4 hours
School not in Session: maximum of 8 hours
Volunteering during class periods will NOT be accepted
Volunteering out of the country must be pre-approved
Paying any fee or monetary funds for volunteer hours is prohibited
Community organizations will not be vetted by Milpitas Unified School District. MUSD will assume no liability
Parents CANNOT sign off as supervisor for community service activities
Students can volunteer on and/or off campus
Approval for Hours
Students do NOT need to have community service hours pre-approved, EXCEPT when volunteering out of the country. If you are unsure of the agency or service, please contact the community service coordinator.
Prep time, lesson planning, and meetings/orientation are NOT considered community service
Events or service work for religious purposes will NOT be accepted
Events or service work for political campaigns will NOT be accepted
Events or service work for businesses that generate revenue for personal profit will not be accepted
