In first grade, we utilize two evidence-based programs to support our reading and writing instruction, Wonders and Fundations. Teachers in the first grade team will blend content and materials from both programs to provide reading instruction to build reading and writing skills.
This year, our class will be piloting the first few units of Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA). CKLA is a comprehensive reading and language arts program that combines the science of reading with rich, engaging content. It is designed to build strong foundational skills in phonics, spelling, and grammar, while also developing students’ knowledge in literature, history, science, and the arts. Through interactive lessons, read-alouds, and hands-on activities, students will strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Our goal is to help every child become a confident, curious, and capable reader and communicator.
Wonders is an evidence-based K–5 ELA program that empowers students to take an active role in learning and exploration. Students will build knowledge while fostering an exploration of our world through literacy. Through Wonders, we are able to accommodate a variety of learning needs to teach, reteach, and extend. There are also ample opportunities for hands-on, small group learning, and differentiated instruction.
We utilize Fundations to teach some important basics of reading and spelling. Fundations is a multi-sensory and systematic phonics, spelling, and handwriting program that benefits all K-3 students. We will combine this instruction with the reading of good literature, which is just as important for your child's development.

i-Ready is an online program for reading and math that helps teachers determine your student’s needs, personalize their learning and monitor their progress throughout the school year.
i-Ready allows teacher(s) to meet your student exactly where they are and provides data to increase your student’s learning gains. i-Ready consists of two parts: Diagnostic and Personalized Instruction.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your student’s needs. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions.
i-Ready Personalized Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your students can learn at a pace that is just right for them. These lessons are fun and interactive to keep your student engaged as they learn.
