Social Emotional Learning

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social/ Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to:

understand and manage emotions
set and achieve positive goals
feel and show empathy for others
establish and maintain positive relationships
make responsible choices

Research shows that SEL programs can promote academic achievement and healthy, positive social behaviors. SEL also helps develop important life skills needed to successfully navigate their world and social relationships effectively.

So, What's the Deal with Brain Breaks?

Brain breaks aren't just a new elementary-teacher-fad, brain breaks are an important life skill, critical to your social/ emotional health. Think about it! It's just not natural or beneficial to sit and stay engaged in one task for a long period of time. In fact, it can be quite counter productive to push yourself to focus when your brain really just needs a minute to catch up.

That's why we're working on teaching our students how to chunk tasks into more manageable parts, how to recognize when their brains need to recharge, what kinds of breaks work best for their brains and situations, and how to get back on task once the break is over. In the classroom, we've created a cozy space designated just for recharging our brains. With inspiration and materials from Mrs. Guertin's incredible professional development on the Zones of Regulation, we have downloaded apps and organized bins with different materials for different kinds of brain breaks.

FOR EXAMPLE...

Some things to calm down:

Pin wheels for deep breathing exercises
GoNoodle's "From Mindless to Mindful", "Take a Breath," "Rainbow Breath," "Weather the Storm," "Chin Up," and others
White boards to draw or write
Calm.com's daily meditation or breathing exercises

Some things to distract from negative thoughts and get back on track:

Hidden picture activities (i.e. Where's Waldo and Spot the Difference)
Sudoku or Greg Tang's puzzles or games
Word scrambles, word searches, or Boggle
Drawing lessons app
GoNoodle's "Maximo," "Take on the Day," "Release Your Warrior," "Be Kind to Yourself," "Own Your Power," and others...
