Best Practice Tips to Support Survivors with Disabilities

Below, we've included examples of some tips to help you work with survivors with disabilities. We recommend checking out Activating Change's website, End Abuse of People with Disabilities, and exploring their resource library to learn more strategies. 

Accommodations

• Ask directly about disabilities - do not assume

• Share examples of accommodations

• Be transparent about impacts of accommodations

• Ask again as you continue to work together

Other Support

• Establish physical and emotional safety- limit chaos, plan for more time, keep things simple, build rapport

• Use different modes of learning - walk people through it, use videos, provide information in writing, use drawings

• Provide or suggest reminders, checklists, calendars, etc.

• Be structured but flexible (flexible schedule, periodic breaks, break tasks down, etc.)
