Grades 6-8 GEx Yearlong

Grade 6-7 GEx 2025–2026 Overview

This year marks the start of a new, year-long Grade 6–7 GEx (Global Citizenship Experiential Education) journey — four half-day experiences spread across the school year (October, February, April and June). GEx helps students learn with the community, not just about it, linking the classroom to real-world issues and action. Grade 6 introduces students to key global citizenship themes, while Grade 7 builds on this foundation, deepening opportunities for reflection, responsibility, and leadership. Both grades work with the same four community partners, allowing students to form lasting connections and move beyond one-off experiences toward meaningful, sustained learning. Each experience is grounded in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and guided by the First Peoples Principles of Learning (FPPL).

Students travel off campus in cohorts, leaving before lunch and returning by 3:45 PM. They should bring a bag lunch, dress for outdoor, hands-on learning (rain or shine), and come ready to engage with curiosity and respect.

Grade 8 GEx 2025-2026 Programme Overview

The Grade 8 Global Citizenship Experiential Education (GEx) programme continues Mulgrave’s GEx journey through a series of 3 full-day, off-campus learning experiences spread across the school year. Building on the foundations established in Grades 6 and 7, the Grade 8 programme places increased emphasis on independence, responsibility, and student agency, while continuing to support students through structured, supervised experiences. Grade 8 GEx helps students learn with the community rather than about it, linking classroom learning to real-world issues through collaboration, reflection, and action. Students engage with a range of community partners and themes that explore social, cultural, and environmental perspectives, encouraging them to think critically about their role within local and global communities.

Across the year, students participate in GEx days, including rotation experiences with different partners and a final experience that allows for greater choice and student voice. Each experience is grounded in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and guided by the First Peoples Principles of Learning (FPPL), with a focus on empathy, care for the land, and meaningful contribution. Students travel off campus in cohorts, typically departing after morning attendance and returning by approximately 3:45 PM. Some cohorts may require an earlier start time. Students are expected to bring a bag lunch, wear “cool for school” civvies, and dress appropriately for the weather and the nature of the experience, particularly for outdoor or hands-on activities.

Why GEx Matters in Grade 8

The Grade 8 GEx programme serves as a bridge between the middle school GEx experiences in Grades 6–7 and the more self-directed, theme-based global learning opportunities in Grades 9–10, supporting students as they continue to develop as thoughtful, engaged global citizens.
