GEx OVERVIEW 2025-2026

GEx is an immersive Global Citizenship Experiential Education programme that connects classroom learning to real-world experiences, builds meaningful community partnerships, and develops confident, globally competent students who act with empathy and purpose.

Mulgrave’s Global Citizenship Experiential Education (GEx) programme is a continuum of local, domestic and international experiential learning opportunities for Mulgrave students in Grades 6–11. GEx experiences take place throughout the school year and include local programmes embedded in Middle School, optional international travel opportunities typically offered during March Break, and a required combined Grades 9–10 GEx June local and regional travel programmes. As students progress from Middle School into Senior School, GEx experiences become increasingly complex and student-directed. The programme is designed to deepen student independence, agency and responsibility, while supporting students to engage meaningfully with communities and global issues beyond the classroom.

In GEx, we do not “go on trips” or “tours.” Instead, students participate in purposeful, immersive learning experiences designed in partnership with community organizations, educational service providers and educators. These experiences emphasize learning with communities rather than about them and are grounded in themes of global significance connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mulgrave’s ongoing work in Global Citizenship across divisions, including the Grade 10 Global Citizenship course.

Participation in GEx is structured by grade level. Middle School students take part in scheduled local experiences; the required Grades 9–10 June programme strengthens inter-grade connections through local and domestic learning opportunities; and international travel experiences are optional and offered to eligible students in Grades 8-11 during March Break. GEx learning is guided by experiential and place-based approaches, with structured opportunities for preparation, engagement, reflection, and action. Experiences may include local community partnerships, regional programmes, or international travel, and are designed to foster empathy, cultural understanding, and a strong sense of global responsibility.
