Transportation

Introduction

The school bus is an extension of the classroom; therefore, many aspects of our plan that apply to school buildings (like wearing a face covering and social distancing) also apply to the school bus. The Department of Health suggests school districts encourage parents/legal guardians to drop off or walk students to school to reduce density on buses.

The School Bus

  • The school bus is cleaned/ disinfected once a day in accordance with the guidance provided.

  • High contact spots are wiped down after the am and pm run depending upon the disinfection schedule.

  • The school bus is not equipped with hand sanitizer due to its combustible composition. School bus personnel will not carry personal bottles of hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer will be provided to school bus personnel at their transportation location.

  • School bus personnel are required to perform a daily temperature check and health screening attestation for symptoms of COVID-19 before arriving to work.

  • School bus drivers, monitors, attendants and mechanics must wear a face covering.

  • Transportation staff (drivers, monitors, attendants, mechanics and cleaners) are trained and provided periodic refreshers on the proper use of personal protective equipment and the signs and symptoms of COVID-19, and proper social distancing.

  • Drivers, monitors and attendants who must have direct physical contact with a child must wear gloves.

  • When temperatures are above 45 degrees, school buses can transport students with roof hatches or windows slightly opened to provide air flow.

Students on the Bus

  • Students are required to wear masks and social distance on the bus. A student without a mask will be provided a mask by the driver/monitor/attendant.

  • Accommodations will be made for students and staff where such a covering would impair their health. If you are in need of such an accommodation, please contact your building's school nurse. Students and staff requesting an accommodation must provide a healthcare provider documentation stating they are not medically able to tolerate face covering cannot be required to do so.

  • Siblings or children who reside in the same household must sit together.

  • All parents/guardians are required to ensure their child/children are not experiencing any signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and do not have a fever of 100.4 degrees or more prior to them boarding the school bus.

  • Students may not eat or drink on the school bus, which would require them to remove their mask.

  • When students embark and disembark the bus, they should follow social distancing protocols.

Transportation to Nonpublic and Out of District Placements

In the event that the District is operating remotely and non-public or out of district schools attended by Manhasset residents are providing onsite instruction, the district will continue to provide home-to-school transportation strictly in accordance with NYS Regulations and Board of Education policy.
