Science for the Week of June 8th

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Have you ever broken something that was someone else’s? What did you do to fix the problem? Goldilocks made quiet a few bad choices in her story:

· First, she went into a stranger’s house.

· Next, she ate someone else’s food.

· Then, she broke Baby Bear’s furniture.

· Finally, she took the liberty to enter his bedroom and fall asleep in his bed!!

Do you know the rest of her story? I bet you know that when the Bears came home and found her in Baby Bear’s bed:

· she woke up

· got very frightened

· and ran all the way home

But did you know… that when she got home, she was crying from fright and her mother wanted to know what was wrong. After telling her mother the whole story, her mother was very upset with her daughter’s actions. She brought Goldilocks back to the Bears’ house to make sure that her daughter not only apologized, but also tried to fix the messes she made.

This is where you come into the story. This week you are going to:

· help Goldilocks build a chair for Baby Bear

· create a bed for Goldilocks to call her own

Like last week, you can use any items you have around the house. These are some suggested items. If there is anything on the planning worksheets that you don’t have at home, you can absolutely substitute it/them for anything that you have and will do the trick!

Suggested “tools” and “materials”: newspaper, cardboard, masking tape, scotch tape, small stuffed animal to test the chair, straws, popsicle sticks, index cards, pipe cleaners, construction paper, toothpicks, glue, plastic knives, Legos, scrapes of material, cotton balls, …and anything else you think might have at home that you think will work!

Monday, June 8^th –

· Read the story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears that is in your Epic mailbox.

· Then draw a picture of the chair you think will support Baby Bear on the planning page.

· On that page, label the diagram with the materials you plan to use.

Tuesday, June 9^th –

· Read the story, Brownilocks and the Three Bowls of Cornflakes or Goldilocks and the Three Ghosts (both are in your Epic mailbox) These are fractured fairy tales, silly versions of the real fairy tale.

· Today is construction day! Use the plan you drew yesterday to create Baby Bear’s chair

· Test your handy work by placing a small stuffed bear (or other animal) on the chair

· Complete the reflection page

· If your chair didn’t support your bear, write what you did to fix it

· If your chair did support your bear, then write “I didn’t have to problem solve because my plan worked the first time.”

Wednesday, June 10^th –

· Today you are going to plan for Goldilocks’s big girl bed.

· Draw the plan for the bed on the planning page.

· Label the materials you will use.

· Think about what bedding you think she will need (a sheet, a blanket, etc.)

Thursday, June 11^th –

· Building Day!! You need to construct Goldilocks’s bed based on the plan you made yesterday

· You can test your furniture with a stuffed animal, Barbie, or other small figurine

· Complete the Bedtime for Bears… and Goldilocks reflection sheet after you have tried out the bed.

Today is a “You Choose” optional day!

Science for the Week of June 1^st

Monday, June 1^st – Friday, June 5^th

Once upon a time there was a very creative Second Grader who figured out a way to help Jack and the Giant deliver golden goose eggs and make a nice profit. That Second Grader is …. YOU!

This week you are going to create a way that the Giant can deliver golden eggs to the country men and women in Jack’s village from WAY UP HIGH in the clouds down to the ground without breaking them.

· You are going to use any materials around the house to construct an egg delivery container.

Possible Container Materials: toilet tissue rolls, balloons, cardboard tubes, egg cartons, tape, glue, cotton balls, bubble wrap, tissue paper, paper napkins, plastic or paper cups, plastic bag, string, etc.

· In order to test this container, you are going to have to use “golden eggs”. These should be either plastic eggs that you may have left over from Easter (filled with something like pennies to give it weight), hard-boiled eggs (and the keyword there is HARD-BOILED), or anything that has a similar weight and shape of an egg that could break or crack.

Monday:

· Print out the story pages in the attachment

· Read the story and color the cover

· On page 5, draw two possible egg delivery containers

Tuesday: Decide which of your ideas you think would be the best:

· circle it on page 5.

· Construct the container.

· Write down the materials you used to build your container on page 6.

Wednesday: Testing Day!! Today you will try out your invention. A true engineer needs to test his/her designs more than once to make sure it really works.

· Use the recording sheet to track your results.

· You will need to test your container from three different heights; three times each.

· If it passes all three times, then circle the happy face.

· If it cracks or breaks one of the three trials, circle the sad face.

Thursday: Reflection:

· Were you able to build a container that protected the egg when dropped?

· If not, how could you improve your container?

· Complete page 7 in your booklet.

Friday: Think about your invention.

· Answer the questions on page 8 based on your invention

· Color the Jack and the Beanstalk pages

Week of May 25th

Thermometer – Temperature

This week we are going to be focusing on temperature, for different states, our local temperatures, how we measure it, and putting that thermometer to good use!! Each day you will monitor and record the outside temperature. You will also include a picture to represent the type of weather we are having that day. (Hopefully sunny and warm!) A worksheet is attached below to help you record your data!

Tuesday

· Page 12 – (Separate from packet) Temperature of Different States - – Color in the red of the thermometer to show the Fahrenheit temperature provided. BE CAREFUL - the lines on the Fahrenheit side of the thermometer go up by 2s

· Page 13 – (back of page 12) “Locations” – Take the temperature in 4 locations at your house and fill in the Red of the thermometer to show the Fahrenheit temperature of each location. Use the thermometer I delivered with your packet!

· For the next few days you are going to be Weather Reporters! You will be tracking the temperature and type of weather we have each day. I will provide you with a Weather Tracking Sheet (see below). Each day you must list the temperature and a picture of the type of weather for that day. (See example of weather pictures at the bottom of the sheet.) On Sunday, look over the WHOLE Week and see if you can find any weather PATTERNS! Write them on the Tracking Sheet in the box provided!

Week of May 18th

Thermometer – Temperature

This week we are going to be focusing on Temperature, how we measure it, and what tools we use! Your Temperature/Thermometer packet was delivered with your Mother's Day supplies! Included in this Project Baggie was a Thermometer! Each day we will watch a video and complete a page or two from this packet! Remember - some thermometers go up by 1s, some go up by 2s and others by 5s! Be sure to check each page to see what they are incrementing by - hints are provided in the daily directions!

Week of May 11th

This week you are going to create a Time Capsule Scrapbook. We are all living through a historic time right now! This will be a fun way to record many things about your Second-Grade self and have it to look back on when you’re older.

It is entirely up to you how and when you want to color it in, use crayons or markers, and what order to put the pages in when you assemble your book.

You might even want to put it in a shirt box with some items from this time – artwork you have created, newspaper clippings, photographs of your family, or other mementos. Once you are done, you will want to ask your parents about where a good place to keep this scrapbook will be.

Take your time to do your nicest, neatest, and most importantly, most honest work. Below is a suggested schedule to complete the activities for your Time Capsule Scrapbook pages.

Monday, May 11^th

· Color and decorate the cover (page 1)

· Draw a picture of the people you are staying home with (page 2)

· All About Me information (page 3).

Tuesday, May 12^th

· Draw a picture of your face in the figure and complete the How I’m feeling information (page 4).

· Color the house to look like yours and write your address on the line. Write about your activities and what you are doing to stay connected to other people (page 5).

· Complete the web of ideas that describe what you’re doing to keep busy (page 6).

Wednesday, May 13^th

· Trace your hand and the hands of the people you live with (it’s okay if they overlap – that might be a cool collage) and write the names inside the hands (page 7).

· Complete the chart of the special occasions that occurred during our social distancing (page 8)

Thursday, May 14^th

· Interview your parents (page 10).

· Go back and complete anything from pages 1 – 8 that you didn’t finish.

Friday, May 15^th

· Write a letter to yourself. Tell yourself what you are thinking, how you are feeling, and what you are hoping (page 9)

· While you are writing a letter to yourself, have your mom or dad write a letter to you (page 11)

Now this is the only page you SHOULDN'T read now. It will be a fun surprise for you to read that

when you are older!

Mother’s Day Projects! Week of May 4th

This week we are getting ready for a VERY important holiday… Mother’s Day! Each day you have three things to do!

3. Complete a Mother’s Day Project

Monday - Mother’s Day Marigolds

· Step 1 – Carefully open brown paper bag

· Step 2 – Remove all materials – cup, baggie of soil, baggie of seeds

· Step 3 – Pour soil into cup

· Step 4 – Make 4-5 holes with your finger and put 4-5 seeds in each hole

· Step 5 – Cover seeds with soil and lightly water the seeds

· Step 6 – Decorate the Brown Paper Bag and carefully place seed cup back into bag

Tuesday - Mom’s Adjective Necklace

· Materials needed: Flower and Lei

· Step 1 – Make a list of 10 adjectives that describe your mom

· Step 2 – Select 7 of these adjectives and have an adult (not mom) check your spelling

· Step 3 – Write one adjective on each pedal line of the flower – use colored pencil or crayon

· Step 4 – Print a picture of you and mom, cut it into a circle, and glue it into the center of the flower

· Step 5 – Staple or tape the lei (flower necklace) to the Adjective Flower!

Wednesday - Mother’s Day Princess Boxes - I Love You Slips

· Step 1 – Carefully open white paper bag

· Step 2 – Remove Princess Box

· Step 3 – Take apart – but don’t unfold the bottom of Princess Box, just remove 3 papers from inside

o You will then have the following items:

§ Princess Body

§ 3 lined pieces of paper

§ back of head glued to stick

§ front of head (white circle)

§ white ribbon for waist

· Step 4 – On each piece of lined paper (there are 3) write and complete the following sentence:

o I LOVE my Mom because __________________________________.

Example: I LOVE my Mom because she reads me a story and tucks me in every night!

· Step 5 – Fold each paper and place back into the bottom of the Princess Body (bottom grey box)

· Step 6 – Draw Mom’s face on the loose white circle (the one NOT glued to the stick)

· Step 7 – Color Mom’s back of her head to match her hair (white circle on the stick)

· Step 8 – Glue Mom’s face to the stick

· Step 9 – Tie the Ribbon around the waist of the Princess Body

· Step 10 – Slide the stick with Mom’s Head back into the Princess Body

· Step 11 - Decorate the White Paper Bag and carefully place Mom Princess back into bag

Thursday - Mom Simile Booklet and Song Sheet

We have been working with similes in both reading and writing this week. Now it’s time to write a simile about your mom!

· Step 1 – Choose an adjective the best describes your mom – you may use one from the adjective list.

· Step 2 – Complete the following sentence:

o My mom is as ___(adjective goes here)_____ as ________________________.

o Example: My mom as fabulous as a colorful rainbow just after a spring storm.

· Step 3 – Check that you used lots of details when describing your mom!

· Step 4 - Have an adult (not mom) check the spelling

· Step 5 – Using your neatest handwriting, write your Mom Simile on your songsheet.

· Step 6 - Using your neatest handwriting, write your Mom Simile in the Mother’s Day booklet on the page with

the orange post it note.

· Step 7 – Below the Mom simile, using crayons or colored pencils, draw a picture of you and your mom!

Friday – Mother’s Day Project Review

Today you will check to be sure all your projects are done. Don’t Forget to practice your songs, poems, and you MOM SIMILE!

For every two days:

· Read the article (Your child can read on the computer or use the hard copy from their folder)

Social Studies and Science - Week of April 20^th

This week we will be learning about Earth Day!

See Pictures of Worksheets below. Documents are attached below and will also be sent as attachments to my Sunday Email!

Monday: Today you will read pages 1 and 2 of the attachment from the article “Ways to Save Our Earth”. Print out page 3 or simply write a list on a piece of paper of the things YOU can do to save our Earth.

Tuesday: Today you will be creating your own Earth Day acrostic poem. Think of one Earth Day word to go with each letter in the word EARTH. Use your ideas to create your poem. You may use the attached paper or create it on your own paper.

Then use the Earth Day mobile attachment. Print out (or draw) the picture of the Earth and color it. Then print out and cut the hearts (three of them – you can also just draw and cut out your own hearts). On the first heart start with the sentence, “I take care of the Earth by…”, on the second heart start with the sentence, “I promise I will never…”, and on the third heart start with the sentence, “I promise I will always…” Last attach the three hearts to the Earth with string or ribbon using staples or tape. Hang it from a window for your neighbors to see!

Today you will be creating your very own Earth Day poster! Think how you can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Use your idea to create a poster. You may use the attached poster or create your own.

At the end, talk with a parent about what you would do if you were given a seed. Tell how ow would you take care it? If you can, PLANT ONE!
