Math Work Students Should Complete During an Extended Break:
Students can log on to IXL using their usernames and passwords. In order to maintain their skills and stay practiced at the mathematical concepts they have worked on with instruction in school, the following level and subsections are recommended. 20 to 25 minutes of sustained practice a day is suggested. Certainly, if your child is on a roll, and wants to complete additional problems, that would be great! However daily repeated practice of 20 -25 minutes will serve your child better than one 60 minute session, and then not practicing math for three days. There are other concepts at other levels your child is welcome to explore. You will know if your child has already completed a subsection because the icon next to it will be colored in. There are fun rewards built into the program your child will receive as he/she masters the subsections. If he/she works on a subsection for the recommended amount of time, and that section isn’t completed, he/she can go back to it the next day and it will resume where your child left off. The teachers can see what sections, the frequency, the accuracy, and the duration of time each student has worked on/for.
Some of the work will be mental math for your child, but other sections will require your child to have a paper and pencil to work out. If your child makes an error, the explanation of how to solve it correctly is stated below. This is an excellent feature, and one that should be utilized before going on to the next problem.
Level D: Subsections G – Addition with two digits, H – Subtraction with two digits, I – Addition with three digits, J – Subtraction with three digits, L – Mixed operations, M – Place Values
