Puzzle Art!
Choose a piece of art and ask your child to cut it into 8-15 main sections – as jagged and crazy as he/she would like! Next, let your child put the pieces back together to create his/her very own art puzzle!
Still Art!
Choose 10 random objects (a leaf, a flower, a cup, a vase, a yo-yo, a small stuffed animal, etc.). Work on drawing some of the objects that are in the bin. Set two or three out and use a pencil to sketch them. Then use crayons or colored pencils to carefully color each object to match the ones on the table.
Create The Rainbow!
Challenge your child to make all the colors of the rainbow. If you have extra paint, this can also be done with (primary colors - red, yellow, blue) paint and then they could use their new colors to make beautiful pictures to put on your windows to cheer up the neighbors!
Scrap Paper Scene!
Use colored scratch paper, scissors. Using any kind of scissors or using your hands to rip, create tiny pieces of paper. No piece should be bigger than your thumb. Use pieces of scraps and glue them into a picture. You could make anything using the coloring tools to add details (ex: make an outdoor scene with green scraps for grass, brown for a tree trunk, green for leaves and yellow for a sun)!
Tube Family!
Turn those paper towel tubes into creatures. Make a family, or a group of them. Then use them to put on a little play!
Sidewalk Chalk Watercolor!
Up your sidewalk chalk game with water and paintbrushes. The water creates a watercolor effect on the chalk!
Spaghetti Noodles!
Build a skyscraper out of spaghetti noodles, tape, and marshmallows if you have them. Stand next to it and have your grown-up take a picture of you. Send it to a relative!
Blow Bubbles!
Blow bubbles outside. For additional fun, create your own bubble wand using household materials or recyclables. See which materials create the best bubble wand!
Make a Fort
Use chairs and a big bedsheet or blanket to make a fort. Let your child fill it with favorite toys and pretend you’re on a camping trip, in a cave, or in a secret hideout! Flashlights make it even more fun!
Not Just a Box!
Use all those extra cardboard boxes (and some strong tape) to build just about anything. Can you build a castle? A rocket ship? A boat? What else?
Dress-up Time
Pick out some costumes or different-sized clothes from the closet, and let your imagination take over!
Compliment Game!
Sit in a circle with your family. Go around and take turns using words to say something nice about the person next to you. Make sure to say "thank you"!
Make your Own Rain Stick!
Use tape to shut one end of a paper towel tube. Fill it with some rice, beans or beads and tape the other end. Decorate it with pictures or stickers. Shake, twirl, and dance!
Human Vacuum Cleaners!
Pretend you are vacuum cleaners that need to pick up toys, clothing, or other things. Put on a timer and make a game out of putting the items away. Together, go through your closet or bins for clothes and toys that are no longer used. Name each item as you fill a bag to donate to a local shelter or share with friends!
Chores BINGO!
Create a bingo card of chores (clear the table, make your bed, put toys and clothes away, sweep the floor, etc.). When your child gets BINGO (3 in a row), he or she “wins” the game!
I-Spy Pictures!
Take pictures of small areas in your home, like the corner of your shower curtain. Show these pictures to your child, and have them look for where the pictures were taken!
Toy Bath Time
Give your child a sponge or a cleaning brush to clean his/her toys with soap and water in the bath or a big bowl. Use words to describe each part of the toy as they scrub!
Family Time Capsule
Fill out the happy printable (from OtherGoose.com) for each of your kids, find a sturdy box, and throw in some items that have meaning to your family. A few ideas include a take-out menu from a favorite restaurant, receipt from the grocery store, favorite outgrown t-shirt, current family portrait, the front page of today’s local newspaper, a beloved-but-outgrown small toy, doll, or stuffed animal. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for a desired "unveiling" date – 10, 15, or (gasp!) 25 years down the road!
