About Year Three
Third year teacher candidates (TC) enroll in Practicum I in their fall semester, attending periodically from the start of the school year until the end of October, when they start a five-week block. This practicum focuses on professional responsibilities, planning for learning, facilitating learning, assessment, and the classroom environment. Teacher Candidates are required to participate in a weekly seminar.
TCs will be directly involved in all aspects of teaching for 50% of the required time during their last three weeks of the practicum.
EDUC 3010 - Practicum I is a STEAM-focused semester that prepares third-year teacher candidates to create interdisciplinary learning experiences during the fall semester. As the TCs are prepared in year two of the program to support all aspects of literacy, effective assessment, and individual child development, the TCs come with a breadth of experience, including how to plan and facilitate individual and interconnected lessons.
For interested schools that can support a cohort 3-6 of third-year teacher candidates, please review the following time commitments:
Important Dates
First Week: September 2nd - 5th, 2025
Full Days in Schools: September 15th, September 24th, October 3rd, and October 24th, 2025
5-Week Practicum Block: October 29th - December 5th, 2025
Week 1: Teacher candidates teach at least 25% with the support of their mentor teacher (MT).
Week 2: Increase teaching to 50% again with the support of the mentor teacher.
Weeks 3-5: Teach at least 50%, developing lesson plans independently.
Makeup Days: December 8th-9th, 2025, if needed
Important Considerations for Schools
Schools hoping to host Year 3 students need to be able to support a cohort of 4-6 TCs.
Interested Mentor Teachers (MT) must have 3 or more years of teaching experience
Our program is a generalist focus, but especially in Year 3, where students are engaging in STEAM-focused discovery, specialized placements are not a great fit (we suggest a year 1 candidate). It would be ideal for MT to have some math or science.
What’s required from you?
With the support of the TC’s faculty supervisor, you will complete a midpoint and final evaluation. You will also provide regular verbal feedback and written feedback on at least one lesson per day.
Being a mentor teacher is a wonderful opportunity for you to develop as a teacher leader and to contribute to the next generation of teachers. You’ll also receive a small honorarium.
