About Year One
Teacher candidates (TC) in EDUC 1231 and 1233, Professional Dimensions I and II, take part in field experience one half day each week during both the fall and winter semesters.
In these courses, students start to explore how teaching and learning are shaped by different influences, including psychology, society, and personal beliefs. They begin to think about how their own worldview can affect the way they create a classroom environment.
These courses also help students understand what it means to be a professional. They learn about ethical behaviour, professional language, and how to carry themselves as future teachers.
During Field Experience I, candidates are encouraged to interact with students, lead small group activities, and gradually work up to leading a full class lesson.

Important Considerations for Schools
Teacher candidates are expected to be at the school 30 minutes before the students arrive and stay to debrief the morning with you after the students have left for lunch.
The day of the week a TC will be in your classroom during the fall is dependent on their course schedule: Wednesday or Thursday.
Field Experience Placements do not require cohort-based placements so are well suited for schools that can only take on 1-2 TCs.
Mentor Teachers (MT) can take on a Year 1 student as well as a Year 3 or 4 student, should they wish.
What’s required from you?
You will be required to submit a short feedback form at the end of each semester. This form provides directions for how teacher candidates can improve their interactions with the students in your classroom.
Benefits for being a mentor teacher include having a teacher candidate in your classroom to provide additional support to your students.
