The Workday experience, then
When Workday first went live in April 2024, many of us felt a mix of nervousness and frustration. Transitioning into the new system meant learning new processes and workflows, and words like “rough,” “lost,” and “intimidated” summarized how we felt during the initial go-live period.
Still, we persevered, and even during these challenging times, there were early signs of the system’s potential, with Workday presenting an opportunity to improve the way we do our work at the College.
The Workday experience: what it looks like today
Now, in April 2025, we’re excited to share growing positivity from the MHC community about using Workday!
The majority of users now feel more confident and enthusiastic about what the system enables them to accomplish in their daily work. Routine help sessions and topic-specific training courses have taught users to use Workday more effectively and become more familiar with its features. Workday has consolidated much of our data and many processes into a single system, making it easier to generate reports and make decision-making more efficient.
Members of the community shared their feedback about using Workday this past year:
“The more I use Workday and the more comfortable I become with it, the more I appreciate it and understand how much it will help going forward.”
“Based on my experience with various HCM [human capital management] systems in past roles, I can confidently say that Workday stands out as the most robust and powerful platform I've used.”
“The org chart function has become one of my favorite tools. It is one of those ways in which Workday creates transparency by allowing anyone to use it to understand our institutional organization. It also is always updating in real time.” - Alex-Wirth Cauchon, Project Sponsor
“Having so many things in one system that used to be several different systems (purchasing, expenses, absences, hiring, HR training) is a huge step forward and a helpful change, even if some components are still a work in progress!”
“When I needed to make a change to [my benefits] due to my husband getting a job with health insurance, that change was easier to do. I didn't have to bring paper copies of documents to HR like I did pre-Workday.”
“Being able to create shortcuts to favorite reports is a bigger deal than I expected.”
“Recruitment and hiring is much more straightforward and I have really appreciated the new performance evaluation structure.”
"I am amazed every day by the people who push forward through difficulty (learning a new system), and inspired by those who show grace, gratitude and appreciation for their peers. I hope we can continue to be understanding of what each team member faces, and the hard work of the entire community in this project." - Carl Ries, Project Sponsor
What's next for Workday?
In addition to implementing Workday Student, there will continue to be updates and enhancements made to the Platform (finance, HR and payroll). The Workday support team has begun the work to configure additional budget planning functionality slated to be ready for the FY27 budget season, as well as more sophisticated reporting capabilities. We continue to track and prioritize the needs of the community based on user experience and feedback shared.
We’re grateful for the continued efforts and forward strides made by the community, a true testament to your commitment to the College.
