building resilience
Tuesday, March 8
Evidence shows that resilience, the ability to recover quickly from challenges, is a strong indicator of a learner’s success in a given field.
After the video, take a minute or so to reflect on what resonated with you. Please write a response to share in the chat, but do not hit return until prompted!
What is a takeaway you'll leave this course with?
I think I will definitely take away the ability to actually evaluate my own work and progress, as this is something I have not done much of in earnest previously. I think part of this was not wanting to revisit past projects or points along my progress where I found myself struggling, so being able to recognize these moments and to learn from them is a great skill I am really happy I was able to work on. I think that being able to do these reflections and work on projects in such a way where I needed to be present with myself in this new way did take a good amount of resilience, and I am glad I was able to stick with it and carry it into the rest of my education beyond this course.
One of the things I've learned from this class is how much self reflection and awareness can help you grow and succeed in a new space. I think that the lessons surrounding mindset, belongingness, and emotional intelligence especially helped me feel more comfortable learning and trying the things we did. This course really made me feel confident about this type of work and showed me that I love creating and collaborating.
Resilience helps us make use of our potential and actualize our ideas. I think resilience is also an umbrella term that involves a lot of concepts we have explored, including self-advocacy, growth mindset, emotional intelligence and cognitive flexibility.
"You practice resilience every day," It is really valuable being able to recognize one's progresss and feel proud of how far they've made it. Whether it was one step or ten steps forward. Since we practice resilience every day, but never really acknowledge it, it would be a real changer if at the end of the day we congratulate ourselves for our resilience for that one day. At least for me, that is something I will continue to keep in mind. As for the whole course, being able to plan, design, create and reflect on all the steps and tools we have at our disposal has been a course like I've never taken before. Being able to name the tools I need or should develop, whether they are mental or physical, has been super enriching.
My takeaway from this course. I practiced self-efficacy, which is to believe that I can do it if I put in enough efforts. During the two months, I encountered several new objects(WelcomBot, Earsketch, EmoBot, Woodwork). Reflecte on the projects and products we made, self-efficacy plays an important role in allowing me to use 100% of my ability, in contrast to not able to use every potentials because of nervous, or lack of belongness.
One thing that I think this course really helped me discover was how willing people are to help - reaching out to teachers, peers, TAs has become lots less scary since I started the iDesign class. I appreciate the fact that everyone was so welcoming when I was coming into this course, I think that was a main attributer to my feeling good about asking for help.
It's really nice to see how resilience is built upon / connects with multiple other skills we learned in class so far. One of my takeaways from this course is that with "can-do" attitude, we can find out great resources and people that help us stay resilient and tackle many tech challenges that we might initially think are impossible
From this video, I realized that we show resilience in basically everything in our daily life. Overall, I believe that in this course we were taught many tools to help us navigate through hard situations both within and outside of tech.
One take away that I will bring forward from this course is how to stop and reflect when working on a project. I know that I can often feel discourage when working on a project and I get stuck but this course has shown me that the end goal is not always perfect but rather learning from the experience. I learned alot from this course which includes how to provide excellent feedback, how to reflect on yourself and the sense of belonging. Before this class, I never realize how important these tools are in everyday life and when working on a project.
I should say that I really enjoyed this course. This course helped me realize that I could try out new things without being afraid. I learned to step back from my comfort zone and try my best, also not to be sacred to seek out for feedback and use them to improve!
Theres not just one takeaway but so many. A different environment, an unfamiliar environment like this one for me has taught me to find my space even though there have been times that I do not belong. I have learnt how to be confident, not doubt myself or my abilities and push myself to my full potential. Being an active listener, changing my mindset when put in uncomfortable situations have been the big changes that I have seen after spending time in class talking about it.
I think an important thing that I learnt from this course is that it is important (and fun!) to step out of your comfort zone and explore new fields of interest, even if it is something you have never interacted with before. With the power of self efficacy, a growth oriented mindset and the willpower/belief, you will be able to achieve it !! Stepping out of your comfort zone can be a scary experience but it can also be a very belonging one, one in which you are able to create a sense of belongingness for yourself.
This course has really pushed me to take a step back, reflect, and evaluate how I approach new and often challenging tasks. I have grown in my ability to approach projects - not only in this class, but in other courses and day-to-day life - with more kindness and empathy towards myself. I have noticed some of the rigid, perfectionistic qualities I tend to bring to my work "soften" and dissolve a bit as I have been more conscious about enacting a growth mindset and tuning into my emotional intelligence. As a graduating senior, I think the skills and concepts introduced and developed over the last few weeks will serve me well in the challenges that are ahead of me!
First of all, I thought this course would be hard and I wouldn’t be able to do well in the class. But as the course started, I found that I was enjoying the class. Through watching video like resilience, active listening and self efficacy etc help me know myself better, was able to enjoy the class along with frustration and got to me to reflect because on my academic journey. I think this course was good introduction to tech world. I could reflect Becks on this course when I am struggling with my academic course and this would help me build my confidence up. One take ways from this class would don’t be afraid of trying course that is not familiar to you.
I think I can lean more into group projects especially when I am feeling extra burnt out and frustrated and hope to take that with me into my professional life because I plan to do more individualistic work in the future so when I can rely on others I hope I do
We use resilience in our everyday life and in this class, we were taught useful strategies in order to navigate difficult situations in both the everyday world and the tech world
From this course I learned to be very open minded about things because you never know where It can take you or if you will like it. I have been open to computer science in general and without that I wouldn't have found myself in this class. I don't know where it will take me but because I was open minded I was able to find something I like to do.
