the role of self-regulated learning
Tuesday, January 25
Please take 5 minutes to fill out this intake survey/reflection.
One thing that can help us to push through a challenging project is the ability to step outside of our own thinking and strategize about whether we have a good plan. That capacity to create a plan, try it out, see how it works before regrouping and try again is called self-regulated learning.
After the video, you’ll have a chance to reflect through a group activity. As you watch, what resonates with you?
You'll be using this game as a setting to engage with the SRL cycle of plan-do-evaluate.
In your breakouts:
One person should screen share the game – this person will always be the one to implement the plan (the doer).
Take turns working through levels, rotating who is the planner.
The planner should: come up with a plan for how to solve the level
The planner should: describe the steps precisely by typing them into the chat
The doer should: execute the steps in the plan
As a group, evaluate: did it work? If not, how will you revise?
After about 10 minutes of this, shift to a discussion, using these prompts to guide you:
How does/could this parallel your approach to coursework?
Are there particular activities where you find yourself being more/less strategic?
What do you think are the 2 most important takeaway messages for SRL in the context of this class for you? We'll use the chat to share out when the breakouts conclude.
What it something you noticed during the activity?
Realizing you may have made a mistake is not the end of the world, and you can totally reevaluate and come back to problems that come up! Learn from your mistakes, collect that data, and adapt your plan to take into account this new information.
It was really helpful having other people offer their views on how to solve the game because some of them were hard for me to visualize, and the person giving the directions would come up with a method I hadn’t seen.
discussing the steps together helped us to solve the problems more quickly
the importance of collaboration and evaluation processes when it comes to problem-solving
Sometimes it was necessary to start over when the initial approach was incorrect
doing activities with peers makes it easier to talk through issues. and learn more about cs
I noticed that we all were able to ask for advice or give potential options to the person screen sharing in a constructive way
I think it was pretty interesting to see how trial and error was so useful. Making mistakes is kind of encouraged here because it gives you new information to move forward.
We had a temptation to execute while stating out the plan.
One thing I noticed during this fun activity is that the game was easier once you stopped and looked at the problem and came up with a plan rather than just diving head on. If we dive head on, it can complicate things and become confusing but if we make a plan we know exactly what to do.
I noticed that the game is similar to programming because you have to look at different parts and see how they work together and take care of the order of things
That there are different ways to approach a problem and sometimes you just need a different perspective
You have to be really clear in communicating and delegating tasks
It was a fun activity and made me feel like I was using my brain in ways that I normally do not; especially when it came to planning and writing out the steps. It was helpful to slow down and process everything out and also necessary to know when starting over was the best option.
The activity showed our group how collaboration is important and the way evaluating and planning help a lot when going about things. It is really helpful to see things from different perspectives or ideas for different people. There were plans I never could have come up with at the stop like others, and I appreciate the fact I can ask for help in strategies
Just kind of having one of those “duh that was obvious” moments laugh it off then reset
I noticed that as we keep moving to next stage the game keep getting tougher. the game lets us try it again and again which helpful for us discuss and brainstorm.
Due: Thursday 1/27 before class
Create your web site using the platform of your choice (such as a google site or wordpress).
Submit the URL on moodle.
Create your first reflection entry:
Write a short reflection (3-4 paragraphs) on you can be strategic when approaching new tech projects in this class. Take a look at the two sample projects below, then use these prompts to guide your reflection:
What is your first reaction to seeing the project and thinking about doing it yourself?
What planning activities can you engage in?
What resources are available to you that can help in formulating a plan?
How will you execute your plan? When and where do you expect to do this?
How will you evaluate if your plan is working?
How will you revise your plan?
