the role of self-efficacy
Thursday, February 3
Self-efficacy is the belief in your ability to succeed in achieving a specific goal or task. The higher your self-efficacy is, the more you believe you are capable of accomplishing the task.
After the video, you’ll have a chance to reflect on connections to your own experiences. As you watch, what resonates with you?
What is one takeaway from your pair discussion?
It is really important to try again when self-efficacy may be low, that way you can prove to yourself that it is possible to get better at an ability.
changing mindset from “what if it goes wrong” to “but what if its great” is extremely valuable- simple shift in language that can completely shift
It was interesting to notice how self-efficacy played a role in which academic classes I tended to sign up for (mainly in high school)
At the start it's better to assume you can do it than to assume otherwise
we talked about how it can be hard to change your mindset, and also that other people can help you start to push yourself and grow your confidence/create a strong self-eficacy
Takeout: reflect on our past challenge. To get self efficacy when we are facing new challenge or taking new courses.
It’s not a bad thing to place yourself in a hierarchy with your group members but remember those positions aren’t stagnant and can change
It was nice to hear that self efficacy is often more important than having “actual” skill in a given area. The notion that you can practice your self-efficacy skills to shift your perception of your ability is in many ways life altering and can open new doors and ways of approaching/moving in the world.
Self efficacy is something which helps you find, know and believe in more about yourself. This in-turn helps increase your confidence, self esteem and work ability
Important to recognize strengths and weaknesses. Self efficacy does exist in places where we are comfortable and familiar but newer things often lead to self doubt which with self reflection can be worked on
self-efficacy did not work all the time, I considered it more as a kind of belief.
\What resonates with me the most is the idea that self-efficacy depends on the context. As we start a new job or a new project, we certainly have these moments thinking about how challenging this job is. However, as we get more familiar with the tasks, we’re more confident that we’ll do a great job
1We talked about how people around us can help us to not have low self efficacy. We also talked about how we can control our thoughts to be more positive.
Self -efficacy fluctuates all the time and is a situation based thing
We talked about how we both have these self deprecating mindsets that tell us we aren’t good enough/ we don’t deserve to be here, I realise that this mindset stops me from reaching my full potential and that is what I wish to work on this semester.
One takeaway that I got from the video is that sometimes when I feel like the challenge is too hard I often stop myself from every starting/completing it. Because of that feeling of not being able to do it perfectly it stops me from getting motivated and trying. But I know that perfection isn't always end goal but rather learning and improving at times.
low self efficacy may sometimes help you push yourself more into what you want to achieve !

Due: Friday, 2/11
You will use the skills from class to create your own paper circuit project:
a fortune teller (inspired by the Magic Eight Ball toys that some of us had as children...)
OR
any other paper object of your creation with at least 1 LED or vibe motor that responds to user interaction
Requirements
Document your process on your web site, including successes and failures encountered along the way. There should be:
pictures of your design (circuit sketch) and steps that you took when creating the project
a final video or collection of photos that demonstrates the final product
a reflection on the project and how it relates to the topics of mindset and self-efficacy or more generally what is (not) in your comfort zone
you can choose to write the reflection 3-4 paragraphs) or record it as video/audio (1-3 minutes)
challenge yourself to step back and think about any parallels you can draw to your learning journey at large, using these prompts:
have there been courses or co-curricular activities that you have embraced or turned away from because you felt more/less in your comfort zone?
looking back, did mindset or self-efficacy factor into this?
if you were to revisit a decision to embrace or turn away from a course/activity, what would you tell your former self?
