Maria Monterroso ('22) - Biological Sciences Major

What got you interested in science? I always enjoyed the sciences more than humanities since I was a little kid and once I got to high school, I realized a lot of girls are discouraged from going into STEM. This realization made me enjoy and love the sciences even more.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: Finishing medical school and starting to receive residency matches, hopefully somewhere in Colorado!

If I could travel anywhere, I would go to: Bali, Indonesia.

If I were an element, I would be: Copper because I make perfect cents :)

Kuzie Madungwe ('21) - Chemistry Major

What got you interested in science? My high school organic chemistry class where I enjoyed the conducting the experiments.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: Possibly pursuing a PhD or MD/PhD.

My spirit animal is: A deer.

If I were an element, I would be: Helium.

Sophia Marcellus ('21) - Chemistry Major

What got you interested in science? I want to see more people of color in STEM and chemistry is the subject I enjoy the most.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: Receiving a PhD in either chemistry or public health

If I had a superpower, it would be: Invisibility

If I were an element, I would be: Neon because it's flashy (like me!).

Christina Lively ('21) - Biochemistry Major

What got you interested in science? Ever since environmental science in ninth grade, I have wanted to learn why the world works the way it does.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: I see myself pursuing a PhD/MD.

If I had a superpower, it would be: To teleport so I wouldn't ever be late.

If I were an element, I would be: Titanium because it is strong.

Peaches Goris ('21) - Chemistry Major

What got you interested in science? I started my STEM journey in high school, after taking AP chemistry and a few astronomy courses at the local college.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: pursuing a terminal degree in physical chemistry

If I were an element, I would be: Xenon because I'm noble and mind my own business.

Gianna Cai ('21) - Biochemistry Major

What got you interested in science? Watching nature documentaries when I was a kid and wanting to learn more about the world around me.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: beginning my career as a physician and joining a medical volunteer abroad program.

If I could travel anywhere, I would travel to: Atlantis.

If I were an element, I would be: Mercury - it's cool while being dangerous too.

Donglu Bai ('20) - Chemistry Major

What got you interested in science? When my grandfather passed from cerebral hemorrhaging, I started to see how powerful diseases are, and how important it is for people to contribute to disease treatments.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: I see myself pursuing a PhD degree/ working in a research institute.

If I had a superpower, it would be: It would be good if I can travel to the past or future!

If I were an element, I would be: Hydrogen. It is so small, but it is so powerful and important!

Destiny Williams ('19) - Chemistry major (Teachers Licensure Program)

What got you interested in science? It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I decided to be a science major. I realized that studying chemistry taught me a lot about the world and has many life applications. I also love conducting titrations!

In 5-10 years, I see myself: I see myself teaching chemistry to high school students while participating in non-profit work/activism.

If I had a superpower, it would be: The ability to fly because I could go places without having to pay money.

If I were an element, I would be: Iridium because it is the most corrosion- resistant metal and found in meteorites.

Jorie Thuon ('19) - Art History major, Chemistry minor

What got you interested in science? I became interested in science mainly as a result of my tenth grade chemistry class as well as those PBS specials about museum conservation I saw as a younger child.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: I hope to be working in either museum or archival conservation and collections management.

If I could travel anywhere, I would travel to: I would travel to Cairo, Egypt to see the Egyptian Museum.

If I were an element, I would be: Copper, because my personality is electric.

Saarah Omar ('19) - Pyschology major, Chemistry minor

What got you interested in science? My passion for food sparked my interest in chemistry, as I wanted to understand the reactions that take place when creating a dish. My curiosity led me to explore the reactions that take place when combining different ingredients, and to see how external factors, like temperature, could affect their flavor.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: Working as a chef.

My spirit animal is a: butterfly

If I were an element, I would be: Oxygen

John Clark - Post-Baccalaureate Studies, Pre-medical track (2018)

Project description: Investigating interactions between proteins and gold nanoparticles.

What got you interested in science? It's not easily reducible to a single point, but it may have been an intro to philosophy class I took when I was 18. Thinking about life, humans, humans thinking about life, and humans thinking about thinking.

In 5-10 years, I see myself: Still a (medical) student.

If I could travel anywhere, I would go to: the bottom of the Mariana Trench; what's going on down there?

If I were an element, I would be: Technetium.
