Describe your research to a general audience.
The research I have completed for my graduate school degree includes both primary and secondary methods related to the management and organizational actions of employees in healthcare, including the medical imaging field. Some of the research for our accelerated classes in leadership included items I have chosen to research and analyze such as employee burnout in the medical field and the MRI safety clearance process workflow. In each of these examples, I have used secondary research from online and scholarly databases to find information regarding the situations involved in each. Since this is for classwork and time constraints, most of the research is secondary, and in the case of the MRI workflow, theoretical. Primary research using surveys, interviews, and observations were made in the burnout research project. Both projects resulted in a presentation of the findings using PowerPoint and graphics while recording myself on video.
As for research in my career at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, we in the MRI department work on occasion with the Penn State College of Medicine at our Hershey Campus on some medical and scientific projects involving humans (patients), animals (mice, rats, rabbits), and materials. Although I am not directly involved in most cases, I do perform scans in the department for radiologists performing research for articles and studies to publish findings in medical journals. We follow specific protocols and designs by the researchers and provide the data from the subjects they identify. Once it is completed and results finalized, we are informed of the research completion and how our assistance helped with creating new discoveries or confirming prior theories.
What do you enjoy about research?
I enjoy doing my own research, especially if it is something that interests me or is very near to my morals, ethics, and wellbeing. I like the discovery of finding new information and comparing to the research others have found in the past. I think primary and empirical research is more fascinating and rewarding to learn something others have not done before or looked at in a new way. I hope my research helps others in many ways and inspires them to be creative, intuitive, and learn more to better all.
What would you like to share with the MAC community?
The hardest part of doing quality research is deciding what, when, where, and how to start. Once you have achieved that critical step, the flow of discovery will align into place. Stay consistent, have passion, be honest, seek assistance, and never give up!
