Student Research Grant Program
The Student Research Grant Program was established to encourage Mount Aloysius College students and their employee mentors to engage in research and conference attendance by defraying some of the costs associated with such endeavors. Research, in this context, is broadly defined and will include projects from all disciplines and types. Students (under the direction of their mentors) should develop research projects that contribute new or supportive knowledge with content in their discipline.
Eligibility and Responsibilities
Students must
be matriculated in a program at Mount Aloysius College,
apply for and be recipients of any awarded funds, and
share their project at the next Student Research Symposium (held annually in April).
Mentors must
be full- or part-time employees of Mount Aloysius College,
supervise all aspects of the project,
assure compliance with established human-participant and biosafety requirements (Note: All research involving human participants must be reviewed by the Institutional Review Board), and
verify that students are adequately trained to complete the project as described.
Categories of Support, Funding Amounts, and Use Guidelines
Students may apply for funding in one of the following categories of support:
Completion of Original Research
Up to $200 may be awarded for supplies, equipment, and software (items purchased with these funds will remain the property of Mount Aloysius College).
Communication of Original Research at a Conference
Up to $250 may be awarded for transportation and accommodation costs and related fees (including travel at the current College rate via personal vehicle) to support students who are presenting their research at a conference or related gathering. Proof of presentation is required (e.g., acceptance notification or a copy of the conference proceedings). Funds may not be used for stipends or reimbursement for services.
Learning about Research through Conference Attendance
Up to $100 may be awarded for transportation and accommodation costs and related fees (including travel at the current College rate via personal vehicle) to support students who are learning about research by attending (but not presenting original research at) a conference or related gathering. Funds may not be used for stipends or reimbursement for services.
Additional monies may be available after May 30 (see Supplemental Student Research Grant Request below).
Process
To apply for funding, students must submit the Student Research Grant Application.
Application decisions will be made by the Student Research Committee and should be received within 2 weeks of the submission date.
Awarded monies will be distributed on a reimbursement basis (i.e., the student pays for the reimbursable items in advance and then submits original receipts to the Chair of the Student Research Committee for reimbursement). Exceptions to this procedure are possible for items that are not able to be purchased directly by students with the prior written approval of the Chair of the Student Research Committee.
Supplemental Student Research Grant Request
Students receiving support through the Student Research Grant Program may submit a Supplemental Student Research Grant Request for additional support if the amount funded was less than the total cost incurred. Requests must be submitted before April 30th and should include all receipts. Additional monies will be awarded at the discretion of the Student Research Committee at the end of the Spring semester.
Questions about any part of this program should be directed to the Chair of the Student Research Committee.
