Teaching French with Authentic Materials

Students are more motivated to learn a second language if they are exposed to authentic materials in that language. It makes learning seem more relevant and makes the language seem more real, especially when there is not much exposure to the language in the community. Rather than continue to teach from a textbook in my level IV class, I decided to compile some authentic materials and create lesson plans around them. My website includes four genres - poems/songs, comics, magazine articles, and short stories. I have included comprehension exercises, vocabulary exercises, language feature exercises, tips on how to use voyant-tools.org, formative and summative assessments, and scoring guides. So far, my students have really enjoyed the materials and are invested in learning French.
