I use Spanish on an everyday basis in my work as a flight attendant, and I also teach Spanish for specific purposes. Many of my colleagues do not speak another language, but I continue my teaching onboard by informing other flight attendants of cultures, language, and resources to use to improve their language proficiency.
However, I have experience in traditional settings as well. I worked as a Spanish kindergarten assistant and a high school Spanish teacher.
Classroom Teacher
I transitioned to high school Spanish in January of 2021. Our language department focused on grammar based teaching, but was attempting to transition to comprehensible input. Our department had no requirements on teaching in the target language, however I spoke Spanish 90% of the time in my classroom. Since I taught during COVID, I was teaching virtually. I had hybrid courses where half of my students were in my classroom while I taught the other half of the students remotely. Many of my classroom activities were designed online where students were able to complete practices virtually.
Classroom Assistant Teacher
I taught kindergarten Spanish in a Language Immersion elementary school in August of 2020. As part of the school requirements, we taught mathematics and science in Spanish with complete immersion. Students spent half of their day with Spanish teachers and the other half of the day with English teachers. While in their Spanish math and science classes, students and teachers were expected to converse in the target language at all times.
