こんにちは! My name is Makiko Yamamoto Border. I am originally from Tokyo, Japan. I moved to the U.S. as an adult.
I am a visiting instructor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I have been teaching 100-level to 400-level Japanese courses since 2021. On weekends, I teach pre-K to K-12 children in a private language and culture school which I co-operate with two other local educators. I am grateful for my diverse teaching contexts, as I view advocacy and program development as an important part of my role as an instructor of a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL). Providing access to the Japanese language education to young learners in our local community is one of the important initiatives I feel privileged to being a part of.
I was trained with principled balance of theory and practice grounded on research and implemented extensive projects that directly served my teaching needs and goals. Through a rigorous professional development experience, the MAFLT program has equipped me with knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate and enhance learning in my diverse teaching contexts. This site features some of my selected course work.
