In a world where technology is readily available in most teaching contexts, it's becoming more important that we are implementing technology intentionally to further language development. In FLT 881 - Teaching Foreign Languages with Technology, I learned about both about new technological tools and how to integrate them effectively. Below, I am proud to share an online, technology-enhanced language unite created on Canvas as well as detailed lesson plans for lessons in the unit that effectively utilize technology.
In FLT 881, I designed a technology-enhanced language unit on Canvas. This unit includes 8 lessons implementing technology tools including PearDeck, Seesaw, Edpuzzle, and Google Suite tools. The unit is centered around the theme of La ropa y el estilo (Clothing and Style) where students use the aforementioned technology tools and authentic resources to engage in tasks that promote progress towards proficiency as well as intercultural development.
Below you will find three lesson plans that detail the technology used and why it is used in three of the lessons included in the Canvas course above. In FLT 881, I completed these lesson plans as we designed our online courses to break down the lesson sequence in an online course as well as justify the use of the specific technology that I used.
Technology Lesson Plan #1
This lesson plan introduces and allows students to authentically practice the use of the verb costar (to cost) in the context of clothing shopping. Students utilize the El Corte Inglés website along with Nearpod, Seesaw, and Google Forms in this lesson.
Technology Lesson Plan #2
This second lesson plan focuses on intercultural development as students are examining the life and career of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla. Google Slides is the main technology tool used and in each slide there is an audio recording of Spanish text for students to use at their own pace to answer questions about Selena Quintanilla.
Technology Lesson Plan #3
This lesson is intended to be the introductory lesson to the clothing and shopping unit where students form connections with prior knowledge by participating in a Movie Talk with a Latin Grammys video. Through PearDeck, students are then scaffolded through various activities to begin learning the new clothing and shopping vocabulary while continuing to make connections with prior knowledge, specifically the grammatical concepts of Spanish subject pronouns and noun/adjective agreement.
