Throughout the semester when I took FLT 841: Topics in Foreign Language Teaching, I completed the Unfamiliar Genre Project. The project started with a project proposal that required choosing a genre in Spanish, analyzing the genre, and providing samples. As can be seen in the project below, after my initial genre-analysis I worked with the professor of the course to choose a different, more relevant genre to use for the rest of the project. Next, as I began to plan a genre-based approach unit, I completed a needs analysis for my context at the time and then an in-depth genre analysis of the new chosen genre: travel Instagram posts. Here I analyzed common characteristics of the genre such as the layout, topical focus, length, purpose, and intended audience. Next, I further analyzed the genre and continued to understand the genre more deeply through a reading log that informed the planning of the instrucitonal unit. The final step of the UGP was to plan an instructional unit using a genre-based approach and focusing on my chosen genre. The five lesson instructional unit includes materials to be used for each lesson, objectives, and detailed plans for each of the five lessons.
