Language Learning Experience

Professional Fluency

Professional fluency in Chichewa

I used the Brewster Language Acquisition Made Possible (LAMP) method to learn Chichewa in an immersion setting in Blantyre, Malawi. I took no formal test, but have been judged by colleagues and native speakers to have full proficiency. I can teach, preach, converse, and argue in semantic domains with which I am familiar. In other words, ask me to debate the divinity of Christ in Chichewa and I will oblige. Ask me to debate farming techniques and I will fail.

Professional teaching fluency in Koine Era Ancient Greek

My proficiency here is at a low level compared to living language standards. However, I am fluent enough for classroom work. When I started, a short 8 line TPRS story would take me 3+ hours to write. I would need to check every form and double check Koine usage. Now I have good command of the basics and a sprachgefuhl on top of it. I could write up a simple story much longer than 10 lines in thirty minutes with little doubt as to its general "authenticity."
