Artifacts for High Expectations:
Reflection:
As a school counselor in training at an elementary school, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the importance of fostering a belief that all students can learn and succeed. Every student possesses unique strengths, and it is my responsibility to help them recognize and utilize those strengths to reach their full potential. I consciously approach every interaction with students with a growth mindset, reinforcing the idea that learning is a process and that mistakes are valuable opportunities for growth. By encouraging perseverance and resilience, I help students build confidence in their ability to learn and overcome challenges.
One of the most effective ways I demonstrate my belief that all students can learn is by providing individualized support based on their needs. Whether working with students in small groups, classroom settings, or one-on-one sessions, I tailor my approach to ensure each student receives the guidance necessary to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. I listen actively to their concerns, validate their experiences, and offer strategies to help them navigate difficulties. By maintaining high expectations for every student, I convey that they are capable and their efforts will lead to success.
Setting and supporting expectations positively is critical to my role as a school counselor in training. I achieve this by creating a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel safe to express themselves. I collaborate with teachers to reinforce classroom expectations and ensure students understand the importance of responsibility, respect, and self-discipline. When addressing behavioral or academic challenges, I use a strengths-based approach, focusing on what students are doing well and guiding them toward positive solutions rather than solely emphasizing what needs improvement.
In addition, I use positive reinforcement to encourage students to meet their goals. Recognizing their efforts helps build motivation and fosters a sense of accomplishment. Through verbal praise, recognition in front of peers, or small incentives, I ensure students feel valued for their hard work. I also work closely with parents and guardians to ensure that expectations are consistent at school and home, creating a strong support system for the student.
Through my experiences, I have understood that supporting students is a collaborative effort that requires patience, empathy, and dedication. By believing in every student’s ability to learn and setting high yet attainable expectations, I contribute to their growth and success. As a future school counselor, I aim to continue advocating for students and empowering them to become confident, capable learners who believe in their potential.

Guiding Questions:
How does the school counselor in training (SCIT) show they believe all students can learn?
Creating a physically and emotionally safe space for all students requires intentional efforts to foster an environment where they feel valued, respected, and supported. I ensure the school setting is welcoming by promoting inclusivity, kindness, and mutual respect among students and staff. I establish clear expectations for behavior and consistently reinforce them positively, helping students understand the importance of treating one another with empathy and compassion. I also provide a safe space within my office where students can express their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. By actively listening and validating their feelings, I help students develop a sense of trust and security. I also collaborate with teachers and parents to address any concerns related to bullying, anxiety, or other challenges that may impact a student's well-being. Through social-emotional learning lessons, group counseling, and individual support, I equip students with coping strategies and problem-solving skills that contribute to a positive school experience. I aim to ensure every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to learn and grow.
2. How does the SCIT set and support expectations in a positive manner for each student's success?
As a school counselor in training, I set and support expectations positively by fostering a growth mindset and creating an encouraging environment where students feel motivated to succeed. I communicate clear, achievable expectations emphasizing effort, perseverance, and self-improvement rather than perfection. By using positive reinforcement, such as verbal praise, recognition, and small incentives, I help students see the value in their hard work and progress. I collaborate with teachers to ensure consistent behavioral and academic expectations, providing students with a structured, supportive framework for success. When students face challenges, I guide them toward solutions by focusing on their strengths and encouraging a problem-solving approach. I also work closely with parents and guardians to reinforce these expectations at home, creating a unified support system. Through individual and group counseling sessions, I equip students with the social-emotional skills necessary to meet their goals, ensuring they feel confident in their ability to succeed.
