Reflection:
During my time as a School Counselor in Training (SCIT) in an elementary school, I have had the privilege of working alongside experienced counselors and engaging in activities that support the development and well-being of students. Reflecting on my experiences, I have seen firsthand how school counselors demonstrate genuine care in their relationships with others and provide students with essential social, emotional, and academic support.
One of the most impactful ways I demonstrate genuine care is through active listening and empathy. I have learned that it is not just about hearing what students say but truly understanding the feelings behind their words. During one-on-one sessions, I consciously try to be fully present with the students, listening attentively and offering them space to express their thoughts and emotions. I have seen how this approach helps students feel valued and heard, which builds trust and encourages them to open up. When students feel supported, they are more likely to seek help when needed and feel comfortable discussing their challenges.
Additionally, I have understood how important it is for a counselor to build strong relationships with other staff members, parents, and the school community. Throughout my time, I have communicated regularly with teachers and parents to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach to supporting students. This teamwork allows for more effective interventions and gives students a strong support system. I strive to contribute to these collaborative efforts, knowing that it is essential to work together to address students' social, emotional, and academic needs.
Providing social and emotional support has been one of my primary roles as a school counselor in training. I have facilitated small group sessions on conflict resolution, managing emotions, and building friendships. These groups allow students to engage in discussions and activities that help them understand their feelings and learn coping strategies. I have witnessed how this type of support empowers students, helping them develop critical social skills to navigate the complexities of school relationships. In addition to group sessions, I have supported students during crises, offering immediate emotional support and helping to create plans to ensure their continued well-being.
Regarding academic support, I have also played a critical role. I have been involved in helping students who are struggling with schoolwork and collaborating with teachers to identify those who may need extra help. I have learned how important it is to create individualized plans to address their academic needs. Whether it involves providing resources, offering study skills workshops, or helping students set realistic goals so students succeed. I also support students in developing a growth mindset by encouraging them to view challenges as opportunities for growth, which can significantly impact their academic confidence and motivation.
In conclusion, my experience as a School Counselor in Training has deepened my understanding of the counselor's role in supporting students socially, emotionally, and academically. Through active listening, empathy, and a commitment to collaboration, I have seen how counselors build strong relationships that create a safe and supportive student environment. I have gained a greater appreciation for counselors' crucial role in helping students thrive, and this experience has further inspired me to continue learning and growing in this field.
