Reflection on the ASCA National Model: The Deliver Section
During my practicum at a junior high school and my internship at an elementary school, I have experienced substantial growth in my knowledge and skills within the ASCA National Model framework. This development has been greatly influenced by feedback from my site supervisors and professors, hands-on experience in the field, and my commitment to reflection and improvement.
Identifying ASCA Student Standards and Closing the Gap
During my practicum at the junior high school, I focused on the complexities of adolescent development, especially regarding academic success. With guidance from my site supervisor, I analyzed data to identify gaps in student performance and engagement. To address these gaps, I developed classroom lessons on implementing effective study habits, emphasizing the use of their student portals as a valuable tool for managing assignments and tracking progress.
Additionally, I worked with individual students to help them create SMART academic goals, ensuring they had clear and achievable objectives to reach their full potential. This personalized approach empowered students to take ownership of their learning and fostered greater responsibility and motivation in their academic journey. I aimed to enhance student engagement and success by targeting these essential skills.
Utilizing Evidence-Based Counseling Strategies
Throughout both my practicum and internship, I became adept at applying evidence-based counseling strategies tailored to each age group. In the junior high setting, I integrated cognitive-behavioral techniques to address issues such as anxiety and academic stress. Feedback from my site supervisor and instructor encouraged me to implement these strategies effectively, and I saw positive outcomes when working with students individually.
During my internship at an elementary school, I relied on play therapy techniques to connect with younger students. I observed that storytelling, role-playing, music, and creative play helped them express their feelings in a safe environment. This hands-on approach engaged the students and reinforced the effectiveness of evidence-based methods tailored to their developmental stage.
Strategies for Personal and Professional Self-Evaluation
My journey through both settings has highlighted the importance of personal and professional self-evaluation. In junior high school, I started to seek feedback from my site supervisor, other counselors in the department, and administrators about my counseling approach, which helped me identify strengths and areas for improvement. This collaborative feedback loop was invaluable in refining my skills.
I maintained a reflective journal in my elementary school placement to document my counseling experiences and interactions with students. This practice allowed me to critically analyze my methods, recognize challenges, and celebrate successes. I learned the significance of active listening and adapting my approach to meet the diverse needs of students at different development stages. This commitment to self-evaluation has fostered a mindset of continuous growth and adaptability in my counseling practice.
Conclusion
In summary, my practicum at the junior high school and my internship at the elementary school have profoundly shaped my understanding of the ASCA National Model. I have developed my ability to identify student needs, apply evidence-based strategies, and engage in meaningful self-reflection. These experiences are vital to my growth as a school counselor and my dedication to supporting the success of all students.
