Student Support Meetings (SSM)
What is an SSM?
An SSM is a grade level meeting to either celebrate student success or support a student during struggle. These after school meetings include classroom teachers, counselors, social worker, a selected student, and their family or guardians. SSM meetings follow a specific protocol. Teams are required to have at least 2 SSMs a month, either in one meeting or over two meetings.
Setting up the SSM
Grade level teams discuss which students would benefit from a positive or supportive SSM. After students are suggested, and a consensus is reached, that students SSM will usually be scheduled for the following weeks team meeting. Positive SSMs can usually be done quicker than supportive ones, so it is possible to schedule two positives for the same week.
After a student is selected, the students' advisory teacher connects with the selected student and invites the family and/or guardians of the selected student.
First, talk to the student and see if they are available. It is usually best to check in first a few days ahead of time, and then the day before to double check. Students might be wary of coming to an after school meeting with all their teachers, especially if it is a support meeting. Try to frame it to them in the positive (ex. “we are just going to go around and say the things we appreciate about you, and how we can better support you at North.) If you have specific concerns, ask your team lead.
Next, call home and invite the parent. Again be sensitive to how you frame the SSM to parents. Describe the positive aspects, but also the supporting aspects if applicable. If a parent can’t attend the meeting in person, make sure to offer the alternative of calling them and putting them on speaker during the meeting.
SSM Protocol
Using the official SSM protocol helps make sure staff come prepared and the meeting is framed in a positive manner
