Depending on students' needs, they may graduate a number of different ways.
Many Citywide students opt to continue their education through MPS by attending Transition Plus. This school serves students ages 18-21 and has classes on careers, bike repair, woodworking, art, independent living, drivers' education, and basic math and reading. Students moving on to Transition Plus walk the stage at South's graduation ceremony but do not receive their diploma until they leave Transition Plus.
Students may graduate based off their IEP goals. This means that, instead of amassing a certain number of credits in specific areas, they earn their diploma by making progress on the goals the IEP team sets out for them.
Students may amass the correct number of credits in the right areas and graduate based on those credits like all other students and pursue the postsecondary options of their choice.
Students with an IEP have the opportunity to continue on to Transition Plus, an MPS school for students 18-21, and take advantage of PSEO (Post-Secondary Educational Opportunities). These students attend college classes at Minneapolis College or another community college, paid for by Transition Plus, for up to one year, and have a special education case manager to help as needed. This plan is dependent on acceptance to the desired college site. Students opting for this plan will walk in South's graduation ceremony but will not receive their diploma until they leave Transition Plus.
Under special circumstances students may graduate based off of progress toward their IEP goals. This would be determined by the IEP team.
