Heritage language is any language other than English that is spoken by a person, a family, or a community. Heritage languages in the United States include languages spoken by immigrant groups such as Somali and Spanish; languages spoken by peoples who are native America such as Dakota; and French and German.

Why Somali Heritage and Culture Program at MPS?

Minneapolis Public Schools welcomes the rich linguistic diversity that our Multilingual Learners bring to our schools. MPS is rooted in values of equity, cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as rigorous academic programming that is relevant to our students. With almost 4,000 self- identified Somali students on the Minnesota Language Survey in MPS. Minnesota has been enriched by the contributions and participation of our Somali Community. Through the dedicated engagement of the Somali Parent Advisory Council, Comprehensive District Design parent listening sessions, and affinity groups, the need to begin a K-12 Somali Language Program has been determined.

Supporting home language and culture is also important for the overall success of a Heritage learner in school.English language learners engage better when their cultural knowledge and language abilities in their home language are seen as an asset; and Research shows English language learners will engage academically when instruction affirms their identities thus enabling them to invest in learning more about their identities. Who are Somali Heritage Language and Culture Learners

Heritage language learners can be

    1. Newcomers

    2. Students born in refugee camps or Foreign-born countries who arrived at a young age but have been in American schools for many years.

    3. Somali-American students who were born in the United States to immigrant parents.

    4. Students who were born in the U.S., but their parents' guardians don’t speak to them in Somali. The students would like to strengthen their ties to their heritage language and culture

What is language loss?

An issue of major importance to heritage language communities is language loss. Language loss can occur on a personal or familial level, which is often the case with immigrant communities in the United States, or the entire language may be lost when it ceases to be spoken at all. A major factor influencing loss of all languages other than English in the United States is the predominance of English in the education system and wider society. Including heritage languages to the education system can support Heritage language retention.
