In Pre VCE Food studies students develop complex knowledge and understanding of food choice, food selection and functions of food. Students develop a wide understanding of the role of food in everyday life from the purpose of ingredients, the influences of food regions, advertising, marketing and science. For their major assessment tasks students follow design processes to make and create solutions to individualised design briefs and research solutions for preferred food futures.
Pre VCE Applied Computing prepares students who are wanting to study Units 1 and 2 Applied Computing. In this subject, students will learn about the hardware and software involved in digital systems, data analysis, programming, networks, cybersecurity and the problem-solving methodology for development cycles.
In App Development, students learn and apply design principles, industry tools and methodologies to create visually engaging, intuitive and fun mobile, tablet or web apps. They learn and follow the development process to design the visual looks of their apps and plan how it will work. Students have the opportunity to create apps of their choice such as games, websites, educational tools, social and informative, and more.
This subject is available as a repeated elective.
In Computer Science, students learn about digital systems: the hardware and software, data and people involved in computers and networks. Students explore a range of topics such as the hardware components inside computers, how people interact with digital systems, how data is used in our lives, cybersecurity, and the evolution of digital technologies.
Design Tech focuses on design thinking, creative problem solving and understanding product design factors. Through this subject you take on the role of the design maker. The assessment tasks will include sustainable redevelopment, collaborative design and a personal project. Students will turn sketches to 3D CAD designs to finished products using equipment such as 3D printers and laser cutters with materials including wood and plastic too. Focusing on both form and function you can design and create everything from laptop stands to jewellery to sensory toys.
Have you ever watched MasterChef or Jamie Oliver and wished that you could create spectacular meals from simple ingredients?
In Masterchef students develop lifelong, transferable skills that will allow them to live independent, self-sufficient lives. Students are introduced to the influence of food on individuals and families and their use in our homes and within the industry. Students learn how to apply knowledge in their and practice of the sensory principles of food, principles of food selection and preparation techniques. They also develop understandings of cultural cuisines and practices through demonstrations and research. For their major assignment students use the design process to design and create food products for specific needs.
Students learn the basics of Robotics by using the design process to design, build, code and test VEX robots. Students also learn time management and team-building skills by working in groups to create and improve their robots in preparation for competitions. Students also gain skills and opportunities in mechanical systems and computer programming with VEX applications which lead to competing at robotics tournaments across Melbourne.
This subject is available as a repeated elective.
In this subject students work on several projects using wood, plastics and electronics for personal and community needs. These projects focus on design and manufacturing using programs such as TinkerCAD and Fusion 360. Students investigate electronics, soldering, 3D printing, laser cutting/engraving, coding, circuit production and prototyping. Students work through the design process to create an individual portfolio, including everything from early research to creating prototype solutions, to building electromechanical finished products to take home from miniature game consoles to mood lamps and much more.
