Health and Physical Education

(Year Long)
Entry Health & Physical Education
At the Entry level of Health and Physical Education students participate in two periods of Physical Education and one period of Health Education per week.
Physical Education requires students to:
Develop the fundamental skills of catching, throwing & kicking
Perform the basic fundamentals, sport-specific and complex movement skills
Participate in modified games to promote inclusivity, fairplay and safety.
Maintain regular participation in moderate to vigorous physical activity and analyse and evaluate their level of involvement in physical activity
Combine motor skills, strategic thinking and tactical knowledge to improve individual and team performance
Will be given the opportunity to participate in many team and individual sports.
Health Education requires students to:
Cover topics of; lifelong physical activity, food & nutrition, cultural diversity, respectful relationships & sexual health and hygiene
Describe the physical, emotional and social changes that occur as a result of the adolescent stage of the lifespan and the factors that influence their own development
Describe the effect of family and community expectations on the development of personal identity and values
Identify the health concerns of young people and the strategies that are designed to improve their health.
Above Entry 8 Health & Physical Education
At the Above Entry 8 level of Health and Physical Education students participate in two periods of Physical Education and one period of Health Education per week.
Physical Education requires students to:
Participate in a variety of modified games, executing and applying movement sequences and strategies across Invasion Sports, Net/Wall Sports and Striking and Fielding Sports.
Regularly engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity, designed to improve both health-related and skill-related fitness components.
Develop and employ personal and social skills whilst undertaking various roles in physical activities.
Demonstrate both leadership and teamwork skills to contribute to an inclusive environment and successful team outcomes.
Health Education requires students to:
explore the benefits of an active lifestyle that promote their own and others' health at home, school and within the wider community.
gather and analyse health information to investigate topics such as; Food and Nutrition, Human Anatomy and Mental Health and Wellbeing, Alcohol and Drugs and Sexual Education.
investigate preventive health measures relevant to young people in order to make informed choices and promote their wellbeing.
explore personal identity & protective behaviours and examine the benefits to individuals and communities of valuing diversity and promoting inclusivity.
Pre-VCE Electives
(Semester-long)
Pre VCE Health and Human Development
Students will examine the concepts of health and wellbeing; explore the five dimensions of health and wellbeing; and study the effects of lifestyle, disease, sexuality, drug abuse and nutrition.
Students will analyse how healthy Australia is as a nation and compare the health of Australians to others around the world. Students will also explore the qualities that contribute to positive relationships and will research the impact that risk-taking behaviours and mental illness have on the health and wellbeing of Australia’s youth.
Some of the topics studied include:
social health: social changes, the impact of media, decision making, communication, resilience and relationships
mental health: self-esteem, identity, body image and mental illness
spiritual health: values, morals, beliefs and well-being
physical health: body functions, including nutrition and developmental changes, with links to measures of health status
emotional health: efficiently manage and express emotions, incorporating resilience and exploring risk taking.
If you are considering VCE Health and Human Development, this subject will provide an excellent introduction to several key concepts.
Pre VCE Physical Education
Students are provided with the opportunity to develop a basic understanding and appreciation of the importance of understanding the body physiologically and the importance of physical fitness for optimum sporting performance. Students will increase their knowledge of the theory and practice of performance in sport.
Students will be given the opportunity to learn topics around:
sports injuries and Management
learn about body systems and how they are interrelated
study the use of energy systems in sport
study biomechanics in sport
If you are considering VCE Physical Education, this subject will provide an excellent introduction to several key concepts.
Above Entry Electives
(Semester-long)
Basketball Development Program
Basketball Development Program is a great opportunity for students to develop their basketball skills and overall fitness levels. Students work together to learn and develop skills and tactical awareness in the invasion game of basketball.
This elective is intended to provide students with more authentic experiences playing basketball. Students participate as members of teams and take an active role in their own sport experience by learning the rules and tactics involved with being a coach and official and a player.
Basketball Development elective will focus on building the key fundamental skills and tactics required for basketball as well as theory sessions that focus on:
fitness requirements for basketball
game awareness and tactics
elite athletes sports nutrition
strength and conditioning
sports psychology.
Community & Leisure
As part of this subject, students will have the opportunity to engage and participate in individual and team activities within their community. Students will be provided opportunities to engage with key concepts and skills while exploring the multifaceted role of physical activity and understanding the importance of regular exercise. Students will learn about the intersection between physical activity and society, focusing on the role of sports in community development, leisure activities, and their broader impact on individuals and society.

Personal Training and Fitness
As part of this subject, students will learn how to properly plan a training program based on the fitness components, training methods and training principles. Students will use a variety of equipment within a gym setting that focuses on improving cardiovascular health, muscular strength, power and endurance and sporting performance.
Students will develop knowledge and skills in the following areas:
human anatomy
health promotion
common injuries
training principles
training methods
fitness components
training programs.
Soccer Development Program
Soccer Development Program is a subject in which students develop the skills and fitness to improve in the game of soccer. Students work together to learn about and improve their own tactical awareness, game sense and technique specifically for futsal and soccer. This elective is intended to provide students with a more challenging environment in which they engage in sporting experiences specific to soccer and futsal. By learning about the various rules, tactics and strategies involved in the game of soccer, not just as players but as coaches, managers, training staff and officials, students will take on a more active role in their own athletic and learning experience.
The Soccer Development elective will focus on building the key fundamental skills and game sense required for soccer. This will occur through both practical and theory sessions which focus on:
Tactics and game sense of soccer and futsal
Sport nutrition specifically for soccer
Fitness requirement and training programs for soccer players
Psychology strategies which can improve mindset
Strength and conditioning to enhance athletic performance
Team Sports
Team Sports is intended to provide students with more authentic sports experiences. Students participate as members of teams and take an active role in their own sports experience by serving in varied roles that we see in sports settings such as captains, coaches and officials. They work together to learn and develop skills and tactical awareness across the following key areas:
invasion games
striking & fielding games
net/wall games.
peer-to-peer coaching of specific skills
investigate the different tactics within sports.
In the theoretical component of the subject student learning is based upon the following key knowledge and concepts:
health and fitness
performance-enhancing drugs in sports
what it means to be an elite athlete (psychological, injury prevention, improving performance).

Women in Sports
Women in Sports attempts to provide students with skills and knowledge to enable students to live active and healthy lives and to make informed decisions concerning their own health and fitness. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in different sports whilst being in an inclusive environment.
Students work together to learn and develop skills and tactical awareness across the three major categories:
invasion games
striking & fielding games
net/wall games.
Students will be able to identify what it takes to be a good role model. They will also develop further strategies to make women feel more included in sports and make them feel safe to participate in physical activity.
In the theoretical component of the subject student learning is based upon the following key knowledge and concepts:
history of women in sports
analysing fitness and levels of physical activity
body Image, self-esteem
women's sport in the media
respectful relationships, risk taking and building resilience
women's health.
