After more than 10 years in Florida, Genie accepted a position teaching first at the City University of New York and then as a professor of Zoology at the University of Maryland. Her classes were so popular that the number of attendees often far exceeded the number of students registered for the class.
While teaching, Genie continued to explore new places and conduct research. She led more than 200 field research expeditions to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba, Caribbean, Mexico, Japan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Thailand, Indonesia and Borneo to study sand fishes, whale sharks, deep sea sharks and spotted oceanic triggerfish. On her travels, Genie would often meet with local students to teach them about marine life.
